Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 15th-19th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week in Science we will finish up Lesson 4 on Fronts and start Lesson 5 on Severe Weather. Next Tuesday (23rd) there will be a quiz over Lessons 4 and 5. Students will also start creating their weather maps in class. They will practice how to read and report the weather like real meteorologists. On the 23rd, we'll record them reading their weather maps in front of a green screen. A unit study guide will go home next week for the Weather Unit Test on the 30th.
- Ms. Uhlenhake and Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: In ELA we are going to continue establishing a reading life and thinking deeply about characters in the books we are reading. We will also continue reading “The Tiger Rising” as a whole class. We are will focus on character change while reading a few mentor texts. In writing, we will take a break on our Realistic Fiction stories and continue our spooky stories for the month of October. We will share our finished stories on Halloween! In math we will be continuing our Multiplication unit. We will focus this week on multiplicative comparisons. These can be quite tricky for students to grasp, so please make sure they are studying every night! Quiz will be either Friday of this week or Monday of the following week.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: In math this week we will begin to translate written expressions and solve multiplicative comparison problems. There will be a quiz over this next week. We will then start 4 digit by 1 digit and 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Timed tests are still Mondays and Thursdays. Students are encouraged to study their facts nightly for at least 10 minutes. They can use flash cards, reflex, ixl, or multiplication.com. In reading, we will continue with our novel "The Westing Game" and start learning about theme. Students will also sort their WTW words this week and spelling test will be next week on their designated days. Please remind your students to take their time on their spelling homework and check to make sure their spelling words are spelled correctly. They must complete 3 activities to turn in by their designated day next week. Finally, students will have a Word of the Day quiz next Wednesday (24th). This will be over the first 20 words of the day. This will be a vocabulary quiz. They will NOT have to know how to spell the words.
