Selby Star
Weekly Update - Jan. 30, 2020
Dear Selby Families,
Our short week has been jam-packed full of learning and fun! We have celebrated our love of reading with read my shirt day, trivia questions about books, some new read-aloud books and some whole-school reading time together. See some of the photos below!
Students were also treated to a planetarium visit, they loved to lie down and see the stars, and especially, Mars! Special thanks to Mrs. McCutcheon for organizing and to our Parent Council for making for it.
As of now, schools will be closed next Thursday and Friday, February 6 and 7. Please see labour update below.
We will still host our Family Movie Night on Thursday, February 6. See the poster below. Please send/call pizza orders into the school ASAP. We hope to see as many families as possible. There is no cost to attend. A canteen will be available.
Thank you for your continued support,
K. Witley

School Year Calendar 2020-221 Stakeholder Survey
The Limestone District School Board is requesting feedback on two options for the 2020-21 School Year Calendar. With Labour Day landing on September 7th, 2020, school will need to begin prior to Labour Day in order to ensure that the calendar has the required amount of days as prescribed by the Ministry of Education.
In consultation with the School Boards that we share transportation with – Hastings and Prince Edward and Algonquin Lakeshore – and our School Year Calendar Committee, we are seeking input on starting school on either Monday, August 31st, 2020 or Tuesday, September 1st, 2020. Both of these options would be PA Days, with students starting school the following day. Each option has implications for the end of the school year and the placement of the final PA Day. These are explained in the survey.
LDSB is looking for feedback from students, staff, parents and our community members. It would be appreciated if you would please take a moment to respond to the two options on an on-line survey. The survey is open for responses until Friday, Feb. 7th. Your input is important to us and we appreciate your time in submitting your feedback and comments. For more information, please visit the LDSB website which also provides a link to the Ministry of Education website.

HEAD LICE and how to GET RID OF IT:
Tips to help stop the spread of headlice:
1) do not share hats
2) put hats in sleeve coats when not wearing them
3) pull long hair back in ponytails
4) use tea tree oil shampoo or products
5) use hairspray
6) do not share hairbrushes or combs
Diligent checking, using treatment products and pulling out ALL nits is the best way to get rid of head lice. Treatments are to be done twice to ensure that the lifecycle stops.
Absence Reporting on Inclement Weather Days
In past years when school buses have been cancelled due to inclement weather, parents/guardians of bused students were not required to report their absence. Only parents/guardians of walkers who chose not to come to school were to report absences.
NEW FOR 2019-2020: All parents/guardians are asked to report their student’s absence regardless of the reason, including when there are bus cancellations. Often, bused students find alternative ways to school and we want to ensure we know a student’s whereabouts to ensure their safety and well-being. Knowing who is supposed to be at school will allow school office staff to best ensure all students are accounted for. Students will report to their classroom teacher for attendance at 9:20 am as they would normally do on a regular school day. This allows school office staff to quickly determine who isn’t at school and launch SafeArrival calls to a student’s designated contacts. We appreciate your support and understanding as we work to enhance practices that ensure student safety.
