Math: Unit 10 Decimal Addition and Subtraction
Math Lesson Structure Review…
Math lessons are designed to take 60 minutes. Please be aware that students can click through a lesson that doesn’t have a graded quiz and mark it complete without actually doing all the parts of the lesson. Please check in with your students to see that they are doing all the steps in each math lesson.
Lesson structure:
- Get Ready! Warm Up: Introduces and orients the students to the lesson.
- Learn and Try It: Activities include bite sized instruction coupled with guided practice.
- Workbook Pages: Offline work. Please be sure to have students show you their workbook pages daily to gauge if they are grasping the concept.
- Quiz: 1-2 ungraded questions that gauge student understanding OR a graded quiz on the final day of the concept.
We are working in Unit 10 Decimal Addition and Subtraction.
- Decimal Addition to the 10th, and100th place.
- Decimal Subtraction to the 10th, and100th place.
- Decimal Add and Subtractions of Real World Problems.

Math Academic Vocabulary
One of the best ways to improve your student's MAP math score it to get them familiar with the vocabulary used during testing. Quizlet is a great site to use.

Math Facts
If your student struggle with 5th Grade Math, one reason can be that they are struggling with their math facts. Encourage daily practice of Math facts to produce fluency using flash cards or interactive Math games and apps. Below are a few helpful resources:

Math TGA #3 Due 2-4-21
Unit 10 Lesson 12: Big Ideas Mini Project
Extended Problems.
The Expectation is for this TGA to be File-shared.
Reading / ELA
Unit 8 - Persuasion and Opinion
We will wrap up Unit 8 in these 2 weeks. We will revisit main ideas and details, along with author's viewpoint. We'll also distinguish fact from opinion.
Students will turn in the Big ideas: Mini-Project (Lesson 15) as their Writing Sample #3. In this mini-project, you will create a text message conversation between two people arguing about two historical figures from readings. Please see below for the mini-project instructions, an example text message conversation and then use the template to create your text message conversation. Remember this is Writing Sample #3 and should be turned into your homeroom teacher. These documents can also be found in the OLS (Unit 8, Lesson 15).
Our next TGA will be an Opinion/Persuasive Essay. You should have practiced your opinion writing earlier in this unit. In Unit 9, you will begin your prewriting for TGA #3. It will be turned in in Unit 10, Lesson 14. Currently it will be due March 29th.
Please see below for the rubric (Grade 5 Writing Rubric) that will be used in grading your Teacher Graded Assignments (TGAs) this year and let that be your checklist before turning in your final drafts. If you have a printer, I recommend you print the rubric and keep it handy as you are working on your essays. This is the same rubric the State Department of Education will use to score your essay in April.
Seesaw Weekly Writing Prompts
Students will begin weekly writing practice in Seesaw second semester. The prompts will be assigned by teacher through Seesaw and students will be expected to respond directly on the slide.
Science
Unit 5: Matter will be a different type of unit. Unfortunately, our OLS curriculum does not correlate with OK state standards, so these lessons will be created and placed into the OLS. USA Test Prep will be supplemented to accommodate for quizzes and grades. Please see the USA Test Prep button below or locate the information inside each Unit 5 lesson. Students will not be able to work ahead in this unit as content will not be available until the date it is assigned on the On-Track Calendar. Students have 2 weeks to complete USA Test Prep Assignments. Mastery is 80% with an unlimited amount of attempts in USA Test Prep.
Science is "optional," but attendance is highly encouraged as all 5th graders will be tested in Science on the OSTP in April.
