Mary's Mount Primary School
Term 2, Week 7 - 4 June 2021
“How is God calling us to be a Christ-centred Church in Australia that is a joyful, hope-filled and servant community?”
PRINCIPAL'S NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers
On Wednesday Mr Smith, Nate, Cruz, Livinia and I attended the official opening of LifeLink for 2021 along with representatives from other Catholic primary schools. The students commented on how much they learnt about LinkLink and the wonderful work that LifeLink agencies do. Archbishop Timothy Costello explained the theme for 2021:
“How is God calling us to be a Christ-centres Church in Australia that is a joyful, hope-filled and servant community?”
As a Christ-centred community we are called to reflect on how we can live this mission in our daily lives. As a school, the daily reminders presented to us by the Year 6 leaders call us to action. We live this evangelising mission in the way we interact with each other and the wider community. We grow in our awareness and understanding of how we can provide support to those less fortunate than ourselves.
The Year 6 leaders will be sharing information with us regarding our schools LifeLink initiative for 2021. Friday 2 July will be LifeLink inspired! More information to come.

HIGHWAY HEROES – YEAR 1 ASSEMBLY
Today the Mary’s Mount Primary School community were entertained by our fantabulous Year 1 children. The children shared their journey with Highway Heroes. It was a treat to see how they have connected with the programme and how it is supporting them to make gret friendship choices in the playfround. THE friendship S.P.I.C.E has been put to good use.
Below is the script that Miss Thresher wrote for the students and there is a message here for us all.
YEAR 1 Assembly Item
This term, we have begun our Highway Heroes journey. Our first focus has been learning how to connect with friends.
On the Highway we meet thousands of different people, and those that we like become our friends.
Having friends – and all different sorts of friends – makes people happy.
Friends are good to share with.
Friends are fun to play with.
Friends are nice to have but sometimes they make mistakes.
Friends can forget things you have told them.
Friends can feel grumpy.
Friends can have an argument with you.
There’s no perfect friend – and no friend is perfect.
One way to connect with friends is being friendly. Being friendly is a HIGHWAY HERO skill.
We can be friendly by using the friendliness ‘SPICE’
‘SPICE’
It’s got five letters and five actions, and it stands for:
S, Smile and say “Hello.” It’s the first part of friendliness.
P, Praise – think of something that’s nice or stands out.
I, Invite – find ways to join in games and the conversation.
C, Chat – talk about things that you’re both interested in.
E, Enjoy – use friendly body language. Friendly body language is part of friendliness.
If you want to connect with your friends – SPICE, is the way to go!
Remember, be yourself because you are special.
We would now like to share a song with you.
This song is to remind you all that we are all special.
It’s also a reminder to never give up and believe in yourself.
Remember to love yourself because you are special and you are loved.
God bless and I hope you have a wonderful long weekend.

We’re all on it - The Highway of Life - with all of its ups and downs, twists and turns. Being a happy and thriving traveller along life’s journey is based in key skills that every child has the right to learn so that they can flourish. Social, emotional and learning-to-learn skills are just like any other skills we teach a child like walking, talking, reading and writing. They need time, specific focus and an opportunity to practise them often enough so that they become part of the psychological muscle. Highway Heroes gives children the opportunity to learn and practise key skills in a fun, supported and experiential way, with a step-by-step approach to building competence.
Marys Mount had launched Highway Heroes and Little Highway heroes this term. The first module we are focusing on is called ‘Connecting for Friendships’. We encourage you to check out our well-being tab on our school website where you will find some helpful resources and tips related to our current module. Students will also be engaging with home activities throughout the term.
CONNECTING 4 FRIENDSHIP; PLAYGROUND RESILIENCE & WISDOM
Module 2 teaches a child how to make and keep friends along the Social Highway of life. Not every child is a social butterfly and is able to make friends with ease and not every child knows how to grow their friendship base and then to sort out the to-be-expected friendship bumps along that journey.
Childhood friendships are relationships that form the templates of how to manage a range of social situations throughout life. Knowing how to make a friend and to join in is an essential skill for every child – one that they’re going to need throughout their primary school years and beyond.
This Modules engages children in learning about how their internal representation of their social world impacts their behaviours and provides multiple opportunities to actively practise skills that increase their friendliness, social acceptance and ability to manage friendships that are sometimes difficult.
WOULD YOU LIKE MORE INFORMATION?
We have added a new page to our website that we will be building on as we progress along the Highway of Life. So if you are after more information about this program and what we are doing at MMPS, be sure to check back on our website from time to time. Of course you can also ask your child's teacher or contact the school office if you would like more information or have any questions.
