The Buzz at Westbrook School
May 28, 2021
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
What a joy it was to see students jumping rope, dancing, running, and laughing with their friends! We had a fantastic Field Day! Thank you to our PE teacher, Mrs. P., for organizing both our in-person and virtual Field Days! Thank you to Mrs. Hourihane and Mrs. Zapler for facilitating our virtual Field Days! We only have a few days left with our kindergarteners and first grades. We are so proud of them!
Car Parade
Our students have done an amazing job this year! We want to celebrate their hard work and perseverance with a CAR PARADE! On June 2nd, between 10-11am, ALL families are welcome to drive through our bus lane. Teachers and staff will be lining our sidewalk and cheering our students on for all of their hard work!! To help us to see who is in the car, please put a sign with your child(ren)’s first and last names on one of the windows of your car for the car parade! Please note - there will be no rain date. If there is inclement weather, families will receive an email that morning to let you know if we need to cancel the parade.
Anything is Possible
The beautiful collaborative art project that Westbrook students and staff worked on will be installed the week of June 7th! The phrase “Anything is Possible” will be proudly displayed on the fence between our parking lot and school. This art piece will be a daily reminder to our students and our school community that through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible! The sky is the limit for our young learners, and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish!
Bee Sash
At Westbrook, we have three school-wide expectations: Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Ready. Students are explicitly taught what this looks like and sounds like at each location throughout our building. We practice them often! Each week, kindergarteners and first graders who are “caught” displaying these expectations are given the coveted bee sash to wear! It is such an honor for our students to proudly show that they were displaying safe, kind, and ready behaviors! We want to extend a big THANK YOU to Ryan, Kate, and the Simon Family for making us new bee sashes for our students to proudly wear!
Mount Prospect Public Library
The Mount Prospect Public Library has a lot of wonderful resources for you and your family. Please check their website www.mppl.org to learn more about the resources the library has to offer. Information regarding their Summer Reading Program, which runs between June 1st and August 31st, is now available on the MPPL website!
PTO
We are so fortunate to have a strong partnership with our parent-teacher organization (PTO). The PTO thoughtfully and creatively finds ways to support our students, families, and community. There is one last event from our PTO this school year! The Westbrook PTO is sponsoring an end of the year fundraiser with Kona Ice. See the attached flyer for more information!
Next Chapter
I am so thankful for the opportunity that I have had to serve as Westbrook’s principal for the last 2 years and as assistant principal the previous two years. Westbrook truly is a magical place where each child is deeply valued and loved and staff and families have strong partnerships. I feel so fortunate to work alongside such dedicated professionals who have a deep knowledge and love for early childhood education. I am grateful for the support and partnership that we have had with families and for the opportunity that I have had to see our students play, learn, grow, and do incredible things! As I prepare to transition to my new role as the D57 assistant superintendent of teaching and learning later this summer, I am leaving with a heart full of gratitude and confidence in knowing that Mrs. Danielle Dillon, who will be Westbrook’s new principal, and Mr. Karl Anderson, assistant principal, will be leading Westbrook School in the coming school year. They are both student-centered leaders who understand the importance of building strong partnerships with families to support student success.
May your summer be filled with love, laughter, play, and books!
Wishing you and your family well,
Kristin Vonder Haar

A Note from the Westbrook Office
Next year, our office will look a bit different! Gail Kaczynski will be leaving Westbrook School after 15 years. She will be so missed by students and staff. Sara McDonagh will be taking over as School Secretary as I move to the District Office. We wish Gail the best and agree with Dr. Vonder Haar-- Westbrook is a magical place, and we have enjoyed every minute with your children!
Have a wonderful summer!
