WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY
The Harlan Elementary Library/Media Center is the place to be for reading, research and inquiry, technology, digital citizenship, creativity and exploration! This Library Connection newsletter will provide you with information about learning in the library, recommended resources available to students in school and at home, special events, book recommendations, and more! Please also check out our Harlan Elementary website for more information and resources. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have!
Please return all library books when you are finished reading them. There is no need to wait for your library day.
What are your students working on in January?
- Students will do a Social Emotional check in with me as we come back from break. We will focus on how students are feeling after spending time at home and make sure to get new books for the new year.
- Adventures in coding - students will continue to work on various courses on Code.org to understand basic coding concepts (sequencing, debugging, loops etc...)
- Students will receive a free account to Kodable.org to continue their coding adventures at home
- K-1 students will learn about Caldecott Award Winning Books and discuss the importance of characters, setting, plot, and sequencing
- 2nd grade students will learn about Siebert Award Winning books
- Computer lab expectations, how to navigate the library website
- Using Choice Boards during choice time
- Understanding the layout of the library and how to checkout books
- How to work at stations (makerspace, centers, group work)
Students in 3-5 currently attend Library at a fixed time. However, their schedule is more flexible and revolves around checkout and integrated classroom research and projects. They will be working on the following for now:
- Students will begin their coding courses for the month of January. We will focus on sequencing, debugging and a myriad of other skills. Problem solving and patience is the key to coding. They will be able to continue with their code.org accounts on their own after we are done, should they choose.
- Students will continue to check out books and use online databases and resources.
- Choice boards and virtual libraries are also available in their library schoology course.
Checkout Common Sense Media for any questions you have regarding digital citizenship. This is a great website to check out to see if movies or books are age appropriate for your children.
