Principal's Update
What a great week to be a Hornet! It's hard to believe that we are already at the halfway point of March and at the end of the 3rd quarter. As we head into the final stretch of the school year, it is important to remind your student that it is important to finish the school year strong!
On Tuesday this week, we celebrated Pi Day on 3.14, for those who do not know, the number pi or π is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159. Mrs. Lowe and the Hermosa Student Council helped to celebrate Pi Day by purchasing oatmeal pies for all students and pies for the staff. Also on Tuesday, the 7th-grade girls spent the day participating in the Women In Science Day at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City. Women in Science is an opportunity for middle school girls to learn about all of the career opportunities available to women in science. On Wednesday, the Hermosa Coffee Shop class held their monthly Hot Shop. Students had the chance to purchase root beer floats and rainbow cups! On Thursday, Ms. Hansen and the Hermosa Theater Troupe presented Fussin' and a-Fuedin' for the students and public. There is a second performance at 6:00 Thursday evening. Students did a great job and it is always fun to see their hard work pay off.
Next week is a pretty quiet week here at Hermosa. There is a Friday Opportunity field trip for 5th-8th grade. Please contact Ms. Venhuizen or Ms. Henwood for more information. We also have the first track meet on Saturday in Newcastle.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

A big congratulations to the students below! Daily, these students demonstrate fair qualities and model this positive character trait to their peers. *Not pictured Reese M -- 5th Grade*
This week in classroom counseling lessons Junior Kindergarten and 2nd Grade continued learning about aspects of careers. Junior Kindergarten listened to a social story explaining their job as a student and what is required of them to be successful in school. 2nd Grade learned about the different roles we all have and how our different roles require different things of us. Major roles we put emphasis on are those of being a student, child, and friend. 3rd Grade continued on with their problem-solving unit in Second Step. They further explored the first step of solving a problem by "stating the problem." Students practiced identifying and labeling the problem which helps set us up for the next step of "thinking of solutions". 5th Grade completed their second mission with South Dakota My Life. This mission focused on accomplishments and how it is important to persevere instead of giving up. Students reflected on one accomplishment they have achieved and answered questions relating to the importance of always trying one's hardest.
I had the pleasure of joining 7th Grade girls for their Women in Science field trip on Tuesday. They did a fabulous job representing our school and felt empowered by the many successful women we had the pleasure to listen to. The second half of the 8th Grade completed their procrastination worksheet. Students identified the reasons they may procrastinate, processed things they procrastinate, and reflected on the reason behind their procrastination as well as making a plan for change.
Enjoy the weekend!
