NEW: This Week's Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
Spring has sprung! I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend and is ready for the week ahead. We will hold a brief homeroom on the morning of Tuesday, April 18 for report card distribution. It is also a short week as there is a professional day this Friday, April 21 for staff so there is no school for students.
For those interested applying for the National English Honor Society here at Northwest, please stop by the English Department office (room 261) to pick up the application and teacher recommendation form. These are due back to Mr. John Bolesta by May 5.
A reminder that for students who are interested in getting their learners permit, you will have one more opportunity to take the Learners Permit test at Northwest on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 18. The test will begin promptly at 2:30 in room 100. You should stop by the main office to pick up a permission slip.
Is your family experiencing hardship?
If you need assistance accessing food, diapers, and other resources, please contact our Parent Community Coordinator, Ms. Patricia Santos, at 240-506-6536 or via email at Patricia_ubiera@mcpsmd.org.

NEW: Earth Week this Week!
This week April 17th - April 20th, Northwest High School will celebrate Earth Day with our very own Northwest Earth Week. Earth Day was started on April 22, 1970, after Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin organized a rally to raise awareness about environmental causes. Since then, over 140 countries around the world have been celebrating Earth Day with a week or month-long celebration in local schools and communities.
Northwest’s Green Team has developed a four-day celebration with events for students and staff to participate in a variety of green practices.
Students: Below is a link to a visual schedule of events and activities for the week. We invite you to join in for the whole week or even just one activity. Let’s all make an effort to Be Green and take care of our planet! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r7LwglfnmHtjCV1hNjte3gPpPI-5PxvT/view
NEW: Speaking Out Against Racism and Hate: Speech by Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight
The rise of incidents of hate, bias, racism, antisemitism, and LGBTQ+ prejudice has grown significantly over recent months. It now requires us all to be a loud voice in opposition to the impact these are having on communities. Montgomery County Public Schools have not been immune to the influence of these factors. When our students feel threatened, fear for their
emotional and physical safety and are afraid to be their authentic selves at school–as scholars, then we must speak up. Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight has and continues to proactively address these incidents.
In a speech on Thursday, April 27, Dr. McKnight will speak to this issue and its impact on the county’s children and school system. The time has come to commit to working together against all forms of hate.
You are cordially invited to Rockville High School on April 27 at 4:00 p.m. to hear a speech by Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight.
Important Note: Seating is limited, and this invitation is non-transferable—Please RSVP

REMINDER: Join the PTSA and Boosters!
The PTSA and Booster Club are instrumental in providing the school with advocacy, outreach, financial support, and building school spirit for our students, staff, and community. In order for us to be able to support these ongoing efforts, we need our families and staff to join us now! You can join at nwhsptsa.org/membership. Thank you!
Northwest Class Spirit!
It's a long-standing tradition at Northwest for each grade to wear their assigned CLASS COLOR on Pep Rally days! Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $8: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $5) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
Class of 2026 (9th Grade): Yellow
Class of 2025 (10th Grade): Green
Class of 2024 (11th Grade): Red
Class of 2023 (12th Grade): Blue
