Practical Formative Assessment
Assessing Student Understanding Minute-by-Minute, Day-to-Day
Join Us for a Day of Learning how to get Students to Achieve at High Levels and Increase their Overall Learning!
Workshop Description & Overview
Overview: How do you get your students to be able to achieve at high levels and increase their overall learning? The answer is formative assessment that allows teachers to assess student understanding minute-to-minute and day-to-day. Research has shown that this type of effective formative assessment doubles the rate at which students learn! This means teachers who incorporate effective, formative assessment strategies in their classrooms, can have their students learn 12 months of content in 6 months. This practical and no-nonsense training will give K-12 teachers the effective strategies and techniques necessary to carry out successful formative assessment in their classroom. The teachers will actively participate and learn formative assessment strategies firsthand, as the instructor models how formative assessment is done in the classroom during the training.
Here are some of the topics that will be addressed in the training:
~Creating and utilizing clear success criteria (learning targets) for students
~Quick, effective formative assessment strategies to assess student understanding from ALL
~Practical student questioning strategies to elicit information from ALL students
~Importance of teacher feedback to guide learning
~Peer and self-assessment strategies for students to track their own learning
~Classroom grading practices
~Creating classroom recording systems to track and document student progress
Participants attending the training will receive:
* An excel gradebook template for recording and documenting formative assessment data.
* A collection of formative strategies that can be used in their classroom
