Judges' Docket
Week of 9/18/2023
Attendance and arrival
Class will start at 8:25 a.m each day and end at 3:15 pm. Students can start being dropped off at the Handley Circle at 8:05 a.m. The doors at Jefferson St. Circle entrance will also be open for walkers at 8:05 a.m.
We will not allow students to enter the building before 8:05 a.m. due to supervision. If students start their morning at the Innovation Center they may be dropped off in the loop at 536 Jefferson Street. WPS buses drop off students at the Innovation Center before dropping students off at Handley.
It is important that students are on time each day and remember to bring their Chromebook charged.
September is Attendance Awareness month which means it's time to announce the winners for the first week of Handley's Grade Level Attendance Competition.
In another close race:
- the Seniors came in third place with 93%
- the Freshman and Sophomores tied for second place with 94%
- Coming in first is the JUNIORS with 95%
Congratulations Class of 2025! Way start the year off strong! When it comes to overall attendance, each student can make a difference in your class' final score. So make sure to show your class pride and Handley Pride by being Present.
A note from our School Resource Officer
Parents and Guardians:
I am the School Resource Officer (SRO) at John Handley High School. I have received several traffic complaints from the Winchester Police Department regarding Handley Ave, Briarmont Dr, and W. Monmouth St. These complaints are received in the morning during dropoff and in the afternoon at dismissal. You have probably noticed my police cruiser with lights on in that area.
The following complaints we have received:
Not stopping at the stop sign
Speeding
Going the wrong way on a one-way street)
These will be enforced starting next week. Please make sure you stop and pay attention to your surroundings. We have students that walk those areas on the way to and from school
The other concern is the McDonald’s on Valley Ave. when our students are walking home. McDonald’s has been calling into Winchester Police Department just about every day after school due to disruptions. If any student is asked to leave and refuses they could be charged with trespassing. We have high expectations for our students and we are inspecting this issue daily. We do not want any issues for our students or our community. Please talk with your students if they walk home so this is not an issue.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you all may have.
Thank You,
Cpl. J. Bahl

Craft & Vendor Fair - Saturday, September 23 - 10:00am - 2:00pm
Plan to attend the Craft and Vendor Fair to stock up on Handley merchandise and crafts, especially in preparation for October’s special celebrations of Handley’s 100th. Other (non-Handley) merchandise and crafts will also be for sale by over 50 vendors. We will have 1923 T-shirts for sale! Enter from Handley Boulevard. Admission is free.
Attention all Kinesiology students:
All students participating in Kinesiology at JHHS must wear tennis shoes that provide support to the foot and ankle, laces must be tied, closed-toed, and have rubber soles. Students are not allowed to participate if they are wearing flip-flops, slides, crocs, or any footwear related to these types of shoes. Students will be given an alternative assignment for the day if they do not have proper footwear to participate in their activity class. The Kinesiology department does have shoes and athletic wear for students to borrow for class if they forget theirs. These items are sanitized and/or washed after each use. Thank you for your help with this.

Youth Advisory Council
The VDH is currently recruiting students for a new youth-led council as part of our state-wide public health initiative. The first round of applications for this Youth Advisory Council are due by September 30th. They will transition into a rolling admissions process for applications not submitted by the 30th. This would be a great opportunity for students who are interested in working with the state on matters of public health and community involvement. The council gives students aged 14-21 the chance to advocate for and collaborate on a variety of public health policies and/or nonprofit projects.
Here is a flyer and link to the application for you to go over. You can also find more information about us and the Youth Advisory Council on our website at “About VDH Youth Advisors”.

Unlike most Parent/Teacher/Student Organizations, we charge no membership fee. We're grateful for all of the ways our families contribute to the Handley community - whether it's with your time, your culinary efforts, or your donations. Now, the Handley PTSO is also able to accept credit card donations via PayPal!
If you're able to spare a monetary donation to support our work benefitting Handley students, teachers, and staff, we are grateful for any amount. Cash and checks may be left for us at the front office. Or click here to reach PayPal and send your donation to JHHSPTO@wps.k12.va.us!

Canvas Learning
The Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is the online classroom software used by WPS. It’s where teachers can post content, discussion, and assessments. It’s where students can extend their learning outside of the normal classroom and school day.
Teachers can post all their class content in one place, including a calendar for due dates, links to class resources like videos, posted homework assignments (and tips on how to turn it all in), etc.
Students can see all their assignments, due dates, and class materials in one spot. They can turn in assignments and see teacher feedback.
Please note that the official gradebook for WPS is PowerSchool GradeBook. Grades in Canvas may not reflect the final grade for a course. For more information please click here.
