Instructional Team - Data Day Prep
Data Day Prep
With our last set of data days approaching, I want us to enter into them as prepared and focused as we can be so that we can truly maximize the time that we have to make the last few weeks of instruction as tight as possible for our Rocketeers.
Below, I have sketched out the data day session focus areas for each content area. All sessions are already created, so it's just about internalizing them and revising them to meet the needs of your teachers.
The three main components I want accomplished from March data days are:
- Teachers walk away from data days with finite data on Rocketeers - what they do and do not know
- Teachers have a clear and concrete plan for reteaching/reviewing to the point of student mastery planned for Rocketeers
- Teachers have enough time to apply and create strong plans to implement in the classroom - I feel that we are now on the cusp of things being really tight in classrooms and that we have "dipped" in rigorous practices, but we have not solidified any of it. I want March DDs to be used to make our campus incredibly tight when it comes to instruction.
In essence, these last few weeks of instruction should be some of our tightest instruction yet because we know more about our Rocketeers and we have more data on their needs and gaps.
We cannot settle for our Rocketeers just "meeting" or being barely at grade level. With summer slide, we cannot afford that. We need to be clear and focused in our coaching so that our teachers can be clear and focused in their instruction.
No time to waste. Let's finish strong,
Christa
K-2 Humanities Data Day Focus
Thursday, March 17th:
- Lead lower Humanities teachers through completing the STEP Pre-work Document using the STEP Wall (not sure if data will be uploaded into SZ by then)
Monday, March 28th:
- Guided Reading Planning - guide teachers through using time to create GR plans for the next 6 weeks of instruction based on progress to goal and BLs. Have them use the prework they will complete on 3/17 as well as completing the DNA skills document you had them complete during the last STEP round; I really like that sheet because of how specific and focused it was. Provide this cheat sheet for Pre- STEP 10 what/how KPs in planning for guided reading. (3 hours)
- Guided Reading Six Week Plan (for use with above time)
- Literacy Workstation PD - theirs should more focused on planning out new centers using the bottom lines that they need to address with students; I would even recommend using the document you used with them last round of STEP testing to identify centers that they need aligned to the BLs. Just use this PD as a resource for you. Teacher-facing Literacy Workstation GNs. Lower Humanities teachers have the knowledge and skill (as well as mindset) about planning for literacy workstations; the next step that I want for them is to now create a new set of centers/revise/refresh based on the BLs from their new set of data. Less time should be spent on what/how of literacy of workstations and more time should be spent on them setting up new centers. However, be sure to also cover MAP skills that aren't covered in BL alignment during workstation. Also, use the OLP password resource Ms. Bowen sent out to the team. (3 hours)
*I want ISE Paras (Hone, Mahoney and McPherson) to join in each of these PD times with lower HUM teachers so that we can maximize the learning for all and be keenly focused on academic needs being met during GR and workstations for all students.
- Workstation resources: Reading A- Z Open Responses, FCRR
Tuesday, March 29th
- Data Day 1:1s - use this document to plan out data day 1:1s with teachers. Walk away with a clear plan of instruction and teacher development focus for each teacher. Also, use this time to specifically name 2-3 areas of celebration and progress since their last data day 1:1. Be clear on the plan and CFU the teacher to ensure that they are clear on the plan.
3-4 Humanities
Thursday, March 17th:
- Lead lower Humanities teachers through completing the STEP Pre-work Documentusing the STEP Wall (not sure if data will be uploaded into SZ by then) (2 hours)
Monday, March 28th:
- Guided Reading Planning - guide teachers through using time to create GR plans for the next 6 weeks of instruction based on progress to goal and BLs. Have them use the prework they will complete on 3/17 as well as completing the DNA skills document you had them complete during the last STEP round. Provide this cheat sheet for Pre- STEP 10 what/how KPs in planning for guided reading. (3 hours) - Bing + Frazier should engage in the Nonfiction Guided Reading session during this time. Frazier can be set up to lead this PD with Bing - just share it with him and the outcomes for their time together.
- Six Week Guided Reading Planning Doc - Narrative + Nonfiction
- Literacy Workstation PD - Teacher-facing Literacy Workstation GNs. Have upper Humanities teachers focus on setting up rigorous workstations aligned to four focus areas (Technology, Vocabulary, AIR, you do from GR and TN Ready assessment prep). Also, use the OLP password resource Ms. Bowen sent out to the team. Use these documents from Box to have teachers MAP skills that need to be covered in workstations as well [Vocabulary - 3rd Grade + Vocabulary 4th Grade] (3 hours)
K-4 Math
- For K-1 Math teachers, they can begin to complete this document based on their recent cumulative assessment data (they should use CPT to ensure that all data collected last week during cumulative assessing is uploaded before Thursday at 2:30pm).
- For Plever and Harriel, give the IP + IP Review session. Connect with Nicki on the version that she gave K-2 Humanities teachers last Thursday.
Monday, March 28th:
- Math Corrective Instruction - you may need to request access to this folder. Teachers need to walk away with a clear and concrete 6 week plan of action based on their cumulative data. Work with Plever and Harriel (have Potter lean in) specifically to ensure a tight rollout of the CI block so that culture is not impeding this time during the next few weeks. I also recommend working with Plever to leverage math club as a time to target key skills from her CI plan as well. (3 hours)
- Math Boards - in the same folder as above. They should walk away with at least 6 math boards planned for the remainder of the school year. (2 hours)
Tuesday, March 29th:
- Data Day 1:1s - use this document to plan out data day 1:1s with teachers. Walk away with a clear plan of instruction and teacher development focus for each teacher. Also, use this time to specifically name 2-3 areas of celebration and progress since their last data day 1:1. Be clear on the plan and CFU the teacher to ensure that they are clear on the plan. Ensure that exit tickets are built into the plan, use the standard quizzes created from the Math team as well as norm on a tracker to use when entering the data so that you have a pulse check on the data across the team. I recommend using the data tracker that I sent over a few weeks ago or something similar so that it is efficient and provides a clarity in the level of mastery across the class.
Specific. Concrete. Ready to Implement and Execute.
With data days in the past, we have gotten close but not directly hit the mark when it comes to fully maximizing our time to truly plan and enter the weeks of instruction post Data Days with concrete, data-driven plans. Now, is the time to maxmize this time. Now, is the time to make "okay" systems in classrooms excellent. Now, is the time to make any loose systems tight. Now, is the time. We have to be obsessive about teachers being as concrete and specific in their plans coming out of data day - don't model nor accept general responses for plans; push to have them be as specific as possible. Sweat the details behind the details. And then sweat even those details. Then, plan to follow up, follow up, follow up and follow up more on the implementation of the plans to ensure that they are truly leading to the end goal for students.
