Parents as Teachers
North Kansas City Schools - April 2021
Personal Visits Update
Please read through all of the information below. Hopefully, it will answer any questions you may have. At the end of this message, you will have the opportunity to let us know your personal preference in regards to in-person visits for the remainder of the school year.
We recognize that each family has a different comfort level regarding COVID-19 and their family's exposure to people outside of their immediate family. Shifting to outdoor, in-person visits is a personal decision and we respect whatever you may decide.
As we move forward with in-person visits we want to ensure you that we have taken the health and safety of your family, as well as, our staff into consideration. Families that choose to participate in in-person visits are asked to follow the guidelines and safety protocols outlined below during their visits.
Outdoor visits will be offered on a limited basis for the remainder of this school year. If your next appointment is already scheduled your parent educator may be able to switch your visit to an outdoor visit if their schedule allows for it, but this can not be guaranteed. Visits not yet scheduled will have more flexibility.
Outdoor visits may occur on a porch, in a garage, on a driveway, in a yard, at a park, etc, and will be weather-dependent. We ask that you take outdoor safety and access to privacy into consideration when deciding whether or not to participate in outdoor, in-person visits.
SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR OUTDOOR PERSONAL VISITS
Meet in a space that is safe for everyone. This includes:
- The ability to maintain a 6' social distance.
- Your child's ability to follow outdoor safety guidelines such as staying near the parent, avoiding traffic, etc.
- Having access to a child-safe space (no access to dangerous objects, a low traffic area, safe surfaces to meet on)
- Having access to a space that allows you to have a private conversation away from neighbors/members of the community.
During the visit your parent educator will:
- Wear a face mask throughout the visit
- Sanitize their hands at the beginning of the visit and as needed throughout the visit.
- Maintain a social distance of 6' throughout the visit.
- Learning materials used during the visit will be left at the home, and not shared with other families.
During the visit family participants will:
- Wear a face mask throughout the visit (unless medically exempt), if over the age of 2
- Maintain a social distance of 6' throughout the visit.
If at any time during the personal visit the parent educator feels as though safety cannot be maintained, the personal visit will end for the day.
**Weather: The weather can be inconsistent during this time of the year. If for any reason the weather would impact your visit, the visit time will stay at the scheduled time and be carried out virtually.
Please take a few minutes to let us know your preference about in-person visits by clicking on your parent educators name below.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your parent educator or call our office at 816-321-5453.

Safe Sleep for Babies
After multiple infant deaths related to co-sleeping, Kansas City police and child health advocates are warning parents of babies to sleep safely.
Any Kansas City area parent who cannot afford a safe sleeping space for their infant can contact Safe Cribs for Missouri.
Safe Sleep Safe Babies:
- While infants should always be placed on their back to sleep, they need to be put on their stomach to play in the presence of an adult. Tummy time strengthens muscles important to a infant's development.
- Infants will not choke when on their backs; this is an old myth. Infants should sleep on their backs for night time and nap time.
- Bumper pads and similar products that attach to crib slats or sides are often used with the intent of protecting infants from injury. However, evidence does not support using crib bumpers to prevent injury. In fact, crib bumpers can cause serious injuries or death. Keeping them out of the sleeping area is the best way to avoid these dangers.
