Family Math Night Invitation
On Thursday evening, September 28, 2017, from 6:00 –7:30 p.m., Maple Dale Elementary will hold an exciting event called Family Math Night! Students, parents, siblings, and other relatives are invited to attend a fun-filled evening of mathematical pleasure. The intent of Family Math Night is to participate in math standards in action as we strengthen the mathematical application, problem solving, and communication skills of students through the power of family interaction. We encourage you to continue to support your child’s mathematical growth through your participation in Family Math Night.
Light refreshments will be served as well as the opportunity to win two math games, Equate and Money Bags. A special reader will be reading two engaging books during the evening that will be raffled off.
Within the next couple of weeks, be on the lookout for more correspondence about Math Night, Math Spirit Week, and the agenda for this awesome venture!
If you have any questions email Mrs. Cooks, cooksc@sycamoreschools.org.

Sharing our goals for the year: Spotlight on Goal Four - Writing Across the Curriculum
Nonfiction writing in all content areas is a strategy that has significant and positive effects in nearly every other area of the curriculum. As Douglas Reeves stated, "Nonfiction writing is the backbone of a successful literacy and student achievement strategy." Description, persuasion, and analysis help students at every level improve thinking, reasoning, and analytical skills in all subjects. We want our Maple Dale students to continue to practice this kind of writing as well as receive feedback on their writing.
Literacy, which includes writing, is an every-century skill. It can be common to believe reading and writing is solely taking place in English Language Arts class, but, this is not the case. Content is what we teach, but there is also the how, and this is where literacy/writing instruction plays an integral role. There are an endless number of engaging, effective strategies to get students to think about, write about, read about, and talk about the content they are learning. The ultimate goal of literacy instruction and writing across the curriculum is to build a student's comprehension, writing skills, and overall skills in communicating clearly and effectively.
