Mexico City, Mexico
We have been in Mexico for about a week now. I have had so much fun here. The food is so good. But yesterday we went to a history museum. It had so many cool things. The guide that was with my group was named Pablo. Pablo could speak English really well.
First Pablo showed us the basic history of the country. He talked about the Olmec civilization who were the first large civilization in Mexico. Then he talked about the Mayans, they were really smart; they discovered astronomy, the calendar, and math. Then he talked about the scary Aztecs. They were farmers and they called themselves the ‘Mexia’ (weird name). But the scary part is that they would take someone out of their tribe and make a ‘sacrifice to the gods’ or kill that person.
We decided to move on after that. Pablo showed us what happened in 1519. He said that the Spanish came with 600 men to destroy the Aztecs. The leader of the military group was Hernan Corts. After they destroyed the Aztecs spanish people came to colonize in Mexico. The people farmed, raised cattle, and mined. This was the shortest part of the tour but my favorite.
We soon went to the Independence section. It said that in 1821 Mexico gained independence. They created a republic form of government. But Santa Anna took over and became a dictator. Santa Anna lost most of the Land in Mexico.
The tour was really fun and cool. I didn’t know people in Mexico created so many things that we use. I had so much fun.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
We just arrived in San Juan. I slept most of the flight. I woke up and saw the sea and then saw the Island where I was going to stay. It was so beautiful. I saw the governor; he was so nice. He talked about the economy. He said that they had the most diverse economy in the Caribbean. For a while around the 1940’s the economy was based on plantation sugar production. He said the industry has surpassed agriculture as the primary income. He said that they almost depend on the U.S. for their investments. Because of the US, their imports and exports have doubled between 1987 and 1997. But since they rely so much on the US, it has gone through hard times due to budget cuts. Around 1993 President Clinton wanted to cut section 936 or in other words he didn’t want to supply them anymore. It was said that 100,000 people were employed under that section and 200,000 were indirectly employed. I hope that we will still have section 936 because we could gain many things from helping Puerto Rico. I told the governor thank you and then went back home.

When I went to Venezuela I met the president of Venezuela. I have heard many things about him being some kind of dictator. I was ready to see if that was true or not. He said his name was Hugo Chavez. He was born in the state of Barinas in the city of Sabaneta in 1954. He told me about all of his scholarships. It was amazing how many he had.One he graduated from military school with a title of sub-lieutenant. He has had a long line of military and his is continuing with that In 1990 he raised his rank to Lieutenant Colonel. In his courses he received the highest rankings and markes. When he completed Postgraduate Studies at Simon Bolivar University he completed Political Science. He did many other courses to help him understand the political and social drama in his country. This helped him become president. Hugo was actually very nice.

Santiago, Chile
I flew into Chile this morning. I saw many mountains. I also saw what looked like a giant desert. I wondered if all of the land I saw was Chile because on the map, Chile is very narrow. Once we landed, we decided to take a bus tour around the country. Our guide was named Francisco. He had a bid accent; at some points I could not understand him. He started by saying we were below Peru and west of Bolivia and Argentina. He also said that chile is between the Pacific ocean and the Andes Mountains. He said one-third of Chile was covered with these mountains. I think those are the ones I saw on the plane. He said on the other side of Chile in the driest place in the world, the Atacama Desert. On the southern tip is Punta Arenas city the southernmost city on Earth. Also in the southernmost point in South Africa is Cape Horn and it is also owned by Chile. I had so much fun on this bus trip. I hope I can go again.

Brasilia, Brazil
I have been in Brazil for a week now, and have learned many things. Mostly things about the people and their culture. Their culture is so diverse. It is like the melting pot of nationalities. They have so many different people. There are many Africans from when the Europeans dominated and brought in slaves. These slaves brought ancient customs and influenced culture. This also added to the complexity. They have a huge population. There population contains over 190 million people! More than half is white people. They have a home for many different religions but the majority with 80% is Roman Catholic. In the 16-1800’s the Portuguese settled which made the main language Portuguese. The whole country is based around family. The families live close together and are huge. But class distinction is based on money and skin color. It is said that if your skin is darker you have a disadvantage. and Women are employed with jobs that don’t pay that much like a nurse or teacher. I have learned so much. It was so much fun.
