Giftedness
“Children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.”
– US Department of Education, 1993
When Dr. Jackson was at Miller on Tuesday, it really concerned me that some of the educators at Miller feel that our students are not gifted, when in fact, they are ALL by definition, gifted because:
- they outperform peers that have all basic needs met everyday
- they outperform peers that do not experience a fourth of the trauma experienced by our students
- they outperform peers that come from traditional homes
- they outperform peers that have family or professionals that can assist them with homework/classwork
- and the list can go on and on
When we prepare for our students, we must prepare from the mindset that our students are both gifted and talented and that we must bring that out of each and every student. This does mean that we will have to plan longer and teach harder. This means that we have to be at least twice as dedicated as most educators. This is what it takes to be successful at Miller and in Alief. This is what it takes to ensure our students are successful.
If this type of dedication is not your calling, I understand. It takes a lot to ensure success for students in Alief. It takes a lot to see the unlimited potential submerged under poverty. If this is not what you signed up for, I understand. I will gladly help you find another school next year. If you remain in Alief and don't give 100%+, I don't understand. Our kids lives depend upon us uncovering the gifted and talent within each of them.
