Nokomis Montessori South Students and Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful November break and is gearing up for the cold weather of December. Puppy and I love to bundle up, have a nice warm cup of coffee, and watch all of the different sports that are in season. What’s your favorite activity in the cold weather?
The school counseling department is still delivering counseling lessons in-person on a bi-weekly basis to all classrooms. During the month of December and early January we will continue to focus on the important topic of bullying, where we will identify what it is and the action steps students should take against it.
5th Grade Students and Families: Middle School tours and open houses are underway! The middle school registration process can be overwhelming, so it’s important to start doing your research on prospective schools right away before the school choice application goes live on Saturday, December 10th! You should’ve received an email with lots of different information about open houses, tours, the school choice fair, and what the registration process looks like for 5th graders as they decide what middle school they want to attend. The different dates for open houses and tours are on my website, on Schoology, and you can also check out the dates and the link to the application HERE. Exciting stuff!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or anything else. You can contact me at my email: kyle.johnson3@spps.org, call me at my office phone number: 651-744-5318 or you can also fill out the Parent Referral as well.
Thank you and have a great month of December,
Mr. Kyle Johnson
(NEW) Hmong New Year Event--Volunteers Needed
If volunteering doesn't fit with your current schedule and/or childcare needs, we hope you are still able to attend the event!
(NEW) Community Program for Getting a Computer
We wanted to let you know that PCs for People will be in our area at Sun Ray Library on Thursday, December 15 from 4:30pm-6:30pm with affordable computers and internet service for purchase by eligible customers.
PCs for People has partnered with the St. Paul Public Library to help bridge the digital divide in your community by providing low-income residents with access to technology.
Eligible customers can indicate interest online through December 7 at tinyurl.com/33dmxtjn to purchase their device at the event; an eligibility document must be brought to the event. More information is available here. Inventory is limited and we appreciate you helping to spread the word. I have attached a flyer with all event details for you to share, as well as a general "about us" flyer.
Signing up is not a commitment to purchase, but informs us of what equipment to have available.
**Please note that PCs for People is not a Saint Paul Public Schools program. We received the above information that an event will be held nearby and so we are sharing it out to our community.
(REMINDER) Hmong New Year Event
This fall, we will do some learning around Hmong culture and traditions. Following, and in partnership with our PTO, Nokomis Montessori South will host a Hmong New Year Event. You can find more information here.
Moving forward, we would love to have more families involved in planning community events. If you are interested, let us know.

(REMINDER) Updates from our Health Office
Flu Season Is Hitting Minnesota Early This Year
Flu outbreaks are hitting Minnesota schools earlier than usual this year. SPPS Health and Wellness is seeing an increase in illness visits in our health offices and more absences for staff and students. Some people are reporting fevers and flu-like symptoms that are lasting longer than normal. Our health staff has also seen recent cases where entire families become sick with RSV and it later turns into pneumonia and/or COVID-19.
We would like to remind staff and students to take precautions against the many respiratory illnesses out there by encouraging frequent hand washing, staying home when sick and testing for COVID-19 to rule it out, and consulting with your healthcare provider as needed.
SPPS is currently offering flu shots at our weekly COVID-19 vaccine clinics. Please visit spps.org/covidvaccine and use the registration links to sign up for a flu shot, COVID-19 booster, or both.
If you have any questions, please contact our health office at 651-888-7652.
