Noteworthy News for the Week of 3/3/20

ELA

We look forward to kicking off our next reading unit, devoted toward using informational texts with various structures and features that aid readers’ comprehension. Students will be exposed to higher-level, content-based vocabulary. They’ll also use illustrations and words in a text as evidence to answer research questions about nature. Through our mentor text, students will also learn about the steps in a scientific process.

This week we’ll also focus on the use of homophones in our spelling unit and using the correct word in context.

Writing

Student authors will also discover how information can be used in a way to create a presentation, supporting a topic with facts, definitions and details. Through a close look at the scientific lens of weather, we’ll be able to connect our reading & writing lessons to our recent science unit, too! Students will be working to gain and share knowledge, resulting in their own weather news report. They’ll also practice this same form of speech/presentation writing as they create their own video news report to share at our spring conferences!

Math

We look forward to kicking off our next unit, devoted toward geometry! Students will enjoy hands-on learning as they are asked to form polygons out of toothpicks. They'll explore the attributes of a progression of polygons: rectangles and rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons through dodecagons. They will also read descriptions of shapes and build examples on geoboards; applying their understanding of polygons’ attributes. They will also collect and formulate data, based on geometric terms. Be on the lookout for the Unit #6 Family Overview coming home on Tuesday! This is a wonderful unit, rich with new concepts and vocabulary!

Spring Conferences!

Spring Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 19th from 3:30-8:00 pm & Friday, March 20th from 8:00 am-noon. Using the information that Mrs. Filippi shared on Wednesday, February 19th, please sign up for the 15-minute time slot that works best for you and your child. In order to ensure that students are also a part of the reflection and goal setting process, the third grade students will be joining us for our conference time. For those that may not be able to attend due to spring break plans, students will be creating video presentations that they can share with you at a time in which it is convenient for your family. Thank you for your support & collaboration!

Economics!

This week we kicked off our next social studies unit devoted toward Economics. This tech-infused, interactive unit will include concepts such as bartering, budgeting, managing expenses, along with making deposits and withdrawals. They will be using interactive notebooks and our Social Studies Alive text to not only learn but converse about supply, demand and global trade. Ask your child all about budgeting Joe's bank account & the video discoveries they shared in this week!

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! We look forward to celebrating this special month at Sherwood School! Please be on the lookout for an informational packet being sent home later this month, along with considering to purchase a Purple Up shirt! All t-shirt orders are due by March 13th. Thanks!

Panda Jar Celebration!

The Stars of 3K celebrated with their Choice Time celebration this week! They also set their next class goal...an extra class recess. I admire the way that the class works hard to earn their pandas and fill our jar! I am so proud of the many positive choices students are making throughout the school day! 3K shines!

Headphones

Please ensure that your child has a working pair of headphones that are compatible to their Chromebook; as they will need to use these on our upcoming IAR assessments in April. Mrs. Filippi will be sharing information with families about the IAR testing in March. Thank you!

Calendar Reminders!

Just a friendly reminder that there is no school on Monday, March 2nd, in honor of Casimir Pulaski Day.

Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocks (extra learning opportunities) are a hit! Kudos to the kiddos that opted to take part in this optional opportunity! Please remember that these activities are completely OPTIONAL. Students can access these opportunities on our Reach for the Stars Google Site! If your child is looking for something fun to do this weekend, these just may be the answer your looking for!

Thank You!

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, suggestions and feedback. I really appreciate your support!
