Miller Moments
September 15, 2017
Dear Miller Families,
Ms. Parks also introduced the Miller Mall to our students! Students will have the opportunity to purchase various incentives from the Miller leadership and instructional support teams. See below for some of the items at the Miller Mall.
We have included videos and pictures of:
- One strategy for "How to Analyze (Break Apart) a Math Word problem."
- Breathing Technique
Thank you to all the parents and families that came out to support Miller at our 1st Spirit Night at Pie Five! We had a BLAST!!!
Beginning next week (Sept.18th), all grades (K-5) will begin home learning and students will be coming home with their reading and math home learning folders. If your child does not come home with their home learning, please notify your child's teacher.
All students at Miller, will be expected to:
Read each night and record their reading on a reading log provided by the classroom teacher. Your child is expected to come home with at least one book to read that has been collaboratively identified by the teacher and student as a just right book that will support their learning needs.
Grades 2-5, will practice a reader’s response at least once weekly
The start date for Guided Reading and responses will be communicated at a later date.
Study their math facts daily (i.e. addition and subtraction facts to 1,000, multiplication facts)
Practice math problem solving skills at least once weekly
Home Learning is any activity which students are involved in outside the normal school day that contributes to their learning, either on their own or with others. We believe that there are clear benefits for children who spend regular periods of time on different learning activities outside of school. Home learning activities should motivate and engage by developing ‘autonomy, mastery, and purpose’.
Autonomy: The student shows the personal motivation to direct their own learning
Mastery: The desire to become more proficient at something through personal effort and perseverance
Purpose: To recognize that all learning contributes to personal development
(Dan Pink, author of Drive)
Thank you for partnering with us here at Miller!
Have a great weekend!
Thanks,
Miller Leadership Team

Safe Spot and Breathing Strategy
During class meetings this week we discussed the following:
- What the Safe Spot is and is not
- Where their safe spot is at home
- How breathing strategies help us when we are in the safe spot.
This week breathing strategy is called, "Smell the flower, blow out the candle." See the video below of a Miller student demonstrating the breathing strategy and why we use the safe spot.
The Momentous Institute shares:
Breathing is something that we do all day, every day. We walk around without even noticing that we’re doing it most of the time (except maybe after we climbed that flight of stairs after lunch). But being more aware of our breathing, and particularly helping children become more aware, is an incredibly powerful tool.
There is a huge amount of research available about the positive effects of mindfulness. At the core of mindfulness practice is mindful awareness, beginning with breathing. When we teach children how to control their breathing, we give them the ability to focus, and control their reactions to any situation.
When our breath is shallow and rapid, it can trigger the release of stress hormones (that fight, flight or freeze that we’re all familiar with). When our breath is slow, deep and measured, it signals our body to release hormones that are associated with feelings of calm and centered well-being.

Miles for Miller - September 29th
Parents!
This year’s main fundraiser is the Miles for Miller! It’s a 9-day program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on September 20. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on September 29. With our big goal of raising $36,000 for our shade structure and guided reading books, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, CASTLE QUEST! an English castle theme all about being brave and living with character. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle, students will learn the “SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO” from a cast of colorful characters.
Donations will go toward our shade structure and guided reading books, and to the entire 9-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!
