News for February 1th-5th

Classroom News

This is an exciting week. We start a new unit. We will talk about Ground Hog's Day on February 2nd. We have to start our crafts for Valentine's Day.

We also have our Valentine party scheduled for Friday the 12th. The morning party will be 9:50 to 10:35 and the afternoon and whole day class will be 1:50 to 2:35. The room mothers have organized the crafts and the food items. Please also remember to make arrangement for your child on February 15th-there is no school for the students.

What We Are Learning This Week

This week we will begin Unit 7 with a focus on Whole Part Whole-meaning putting parts together to make something new and taking things apart to help me learn. In this unit we also explore "what happens when..."

Our Main Goals this week:

Language: Children will be able to identify the letter D and things that begin with the letter. Our children will be working on letter matching, syllables in common words, letter identification with letter sounds, and rhyming with common words.

Math: Your child will be able to name common shapes and the shapes of pattern blocks. We will use tangram puzzles to create pictures. Your child will show how they can make other shapes from smaller shapes. Your child will be working with a mat or divided plate to create simple addition and subtraction stories up to 5.

Social Studies: Your child will be working on how can I say that in a better way. We will be looking at kindness and the celebration of Valentines.

Social Skills Program-Second Step

Our concept this week deals with the feeling of being angry or mad. We want children to identify the feeling of being angry or mad when presented with physical clues and to be able to tell others when they are angry.

This lesson helps children improve their ability to identify anger in themselves and others. Being able to read the feelings of others and identify their own feelings is especially important for child who interact in an aggressive manner. We want our children to know it is ok to feel angry, but we want to emphasize that everyone feels angry sometimes. This is a natural feeling. In addition, our children need to know that when people are angry our body might feel uncomfortable, such as hot and tight. When we are angry,we do not want to hurt anyone or say mean things to people. This is where we also want to encourage cooling down and ways of showing kindness.
