I have enjoyed traveling and meeting many more of you over the last month, but most of all I enjoyed "seeing" everyone at the First Friday Book Talk Session. Shout out to the awesome collaboration with public librarians and school librarians to hopefully bring you new book titles for your collection.

MORNING SESSION - The Secret Life of Google

Presenter: Elizabeth Sessions, Technology in Motion Specialist, Region 10
Description: Are you tired of plagiarism and copyright infringement? Do your students think copyright means "I can copy right?" Do a few of your teachers occasionally just "make one copy," after all it's for the children? Join us as we investigate the secret life of Google and explore some of the "not so obvious" tools that Google makes available in our war against copyright infringement. We will be exploring Google tools, visiting copyright free websites and investigating ways to make copyright habits friendly and easy for students using some great Google tools and our imaginations.

AFTERNOON SESSION - Using Google Classroom for Today’s Media Specialist
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Presented by: Dr. Roland Weldon, Technology in Motion Specialist, Region 11
Description: This brief session invites Alabama Media Specialists into a Google Classroom demonstrating it utility as a curation tool of digital content by subject area. Another aspect explored is the creation of digital assignments that provide safe researching tools connecting easily with the Alabama Virtual Library. Lastly, we will explore Google Classroom as as a powerful collaborative tool where Media Specialists can work together transcending geographic barriers to cultivate a portal of learning for faculty members and students to utilize.

Consider nominating a deserving library media specialist, administrator, or yourself for an ASLA award. Nominations close on May 3, 2019.

ASLA is in need of more playground sessions for either STEM or EdTech in the Library. These are informal speed-learning type sessions where you can present an idea, tech tool, or STEM activity where participants can ask questions, demo the tool/activity, and pique interest for integrating technology and STEM into the school library.

The JSU Inservice Center - School Librarians Day of Professional Learning
Author Deborah Wiles coming to speak! She has written several children's books including A Long Line of Cakes. We are excited to have her speak that day and feel the group will enjoy hearing from her.

ALLA + ASLA Legislative Day - May 1, 2019 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Librarians, students, and citizens will be demonstrating the new AVL website and speaking to legislators about increasing AVL funding to $3.3M.
In addition, continue to speak with legislators about upholding the $200/unit recommendation in the ALSDE and Governor's budgets for School Library Enhancement.
