Reinventing Traditions
Priya Parker is a person I follow on Instagram. She throughtfully writes about gathering groups of people, and belonging. She recently had a post on Instagram about questions to ask when you are reinventing new traditions.
I know we have changed a lot and are forever evolving into the next thing we want to be. As we change and evolve, I thought these were helpful questions as we embark on new traditions and start to think about the 23-24 school year.

Hilarious pictures that will be included in the student's diploma envelope as a reminder that we care about them- and that we are goofy! There is a folder in the Administrative file that says "Family Photos" to see them all. Enjoy!
CAREER CONNECTIONS
MAC Skills - Final Projects!
We had a great week 4 wrap up! See photos and videos here.
- Anthony and Devin have finished their final projects;
- CJ and Vandal are working on theirs.
- Ethan, Marcus, and Nicholas attended less than half of the eight sessions, so their daily reflections will be converted into Unit credits.
- Taelor and Tilor earned two unit credits for going on Wednesday.
Let Chris know if you have other questions or concerns about student attendance and credit.
Report: Cosmetology Panel
Today, we heard from two small business owners: Kay from Kay's Hair House and Shy Miller from Bella Lash Co. They talked about targeted marketing, branding and promoting yourself, fluctuating seasons, and business planning. Shout out to Ms. C for connecting us to Kay!
Black History Tour - Sign Ups Open
Open to juniors who will be with us next school year. We have four spots for students, and we will be joining up with students from the four high schools' BSUs (Black Student Unions). Let Chris know if you have questions.
REPEATS
UPDATE: Preparing for Summer
UPDATE:
I asked for further clarification with Dr. Beagle.
- G2 is being completely cleared out as it will be a sensory room for the Golden Oaks students.
- G4 will the storage space for the whole building.
You need to do this:
- Everything in the room needs to be packed up except file cabinets.
- Every surface (countertops, bookshelf tops, etc.) needs to be free of everything and the walls cleared.
- Ron will have boxes and tape for us.
Advocates and office staff will be ready to help pack boxes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Golden Oaks will be at Jacobs Center this summer. Our two classrooms will be used, one for the sensory swing and the other for storage starting on May 30. Below are some guidelines from Dr. Beagle.
Summer School /End of Year Preparation
2. Take down All items off the Walls
3. Please Throw Away All Unwanted Items – We will have very limited Storage
4. Pack up Your Room in Boxes – Using the Following
a. Use a Black Permanent Marker
b. Room #s and Last Name on Top and Front of Box
5. Use this time to get rid of Unwanted Things
6. Timeline – 5/26/23 end of the day
Obligations
However, I will not hold diplomas for small obligations like cords/ cubes. As long as I have their computer, I will make a determination based on what is on the bill. If you have students that you know there is financial need, please let me know so that I can take that into consideration.
Let me know what questions you have. :)
Spring/ Summer 2023 Volunteer & Internship Opportunities

As you are listening to students, you might consider connecting them with som of the opportunities on this list. As we get closer to summer, I will advertise the ones that are applicable to our students in the Community Newsletter.

Attendance
Our beliefs about our work....
Students will cultivate their strengths as they become independent learners engaged in authentic experiences while in our program. Through their experiences and learning about themselves and the world around them, they will develop a post-secondary vision and plan for themselves.
Staff will listen to students, build strong relationships, connect to resources, and create a community of support.
This approach is critical to the success of our students and requires unwaviering commitment from students and staff.
