Tips for Educators to Make it Through the Holidays
Crazy Doc's rant and raves...
One full week and some change until Winter Break, these are going to be a crazy 10 days! Remember, like we discussed at Thanksgiving this is a very challenging time for some of our neediest students. They have uncertainity ahead of them and sadly they take it out on the ones they trust the most.
Thank you for all you do everyday.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Quick hits:
- As you start to put your calendar together for the year, please avoid field trips on Wednesday (Wings), Thursday, and Friday.
- Please keep all tardy passes and send them home quarterly with the report card envelopes.
Christmas Stories...
Way to go attendance winners for the weeks of Nov. 18-25! The k-2 award goes to Mrs. Olive's with 97.63% attendance and the 3-5 award goes to Mrs. Cook's with 96.25% attendance. Great job!
On-Going Reminders
- If you send a student to the focus room please do so with one of the tickets Casey has provided, that way she knows why they are there. If they do not have a ticket they will be sent back to class.
- Please follow the nurse's stoplight schedule.
- If you send a student to the office please make sure they have a pass.
- Please make sure you are not sending large printing jobs to the basic printers, please send these to the copiers.
- Lunch counts and attendance need to be entered by 9:30, or Terri will start calling.
Teacher Spotlight
There were shout outs this week to Mr. Andrew and Mrs. Squibb, way to go!
Do you have a idea for a person in the spotlight? Please let me know.
Parent Engagement
We all know the importance of positive parent engagement, but it can sometimes be difficult to find the time to make those calls.
- Praise--It can't be stressed enough the impact of calling a parent for positive reasons before you have to call for negative ones. Seek out the strengths of every child and find a way to praise those strengths so parents will view you as an advocate, not an adversary.
- Purpose--Be transparent in our initiatives. If you are trying something new in your class or have a new procedure you want to try out, be sure to communicate that to our families.
- Personalize--Many of you already find ways to communicate in a general way through Dojo or classroom newsletters. But we also need to personalize for our diverse families. How are you communicating to families who don't Dojo? What do you do if voicemail is not set up on their phones? What if our families don't speak the teacher's language? Teachers need to be flexible and willing to reach out in different ways to meet the needs of all of our families.
