March 2019
April is National Poetry Month!!
How can you enjoy some poetry with your child...
While doing this you will be motivating them to read and helping them develop vocabulary, rhyming devices, fluency, and critical reading skills.
* Read silly poetry aloud. This is very engaging because it makes you laugh while reading something that plays with language and tells a story.
* Share some of your favorite poems with your child. Give them the opportunity to see how much you enjoy and appreciate it.
* Pick a theme, such as limericks, which can be very entertaining. Read and then have fun writing one of your own. Try some Ogden Nash for starters.
* Check Reading Rockets.org so you and your child can select a poem to carry and share on Poem in Your Pocket Day Thursday, April 18th.

Poem in Your Pocket Day

East Vincent will celebrate on Wednesday, April 17th
Select a poem, carry it with you, and share it with others throughout the day!
Poem in Your Pocket Day is part of National Poetry Month. On this day, select a poem, carry it with you, and share it with others at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, street corners, and on social media using the hashtag #pocketpoem.
Poem in Your Pocket Day was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city’s Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to include all fifty United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. In 2016, the League of Canadian Poets extended Poem in Your Pocket Day to Canada.
