How To Stop Yelling At Your Kids, And What To Do Instead
Chapter 3: Engage for Positive Class Climate
5 Actions to Create a Positive Class Climate:
- Raise the bar
- Manage mind-body states
- Establish that "we are family"
- Sustain emotional positivity
- Teach positive social and emotional responses
Reflective Questions:
- How do you raise the bar in your classroom?
- How do you create a "family" atmosphere in your classroom?
- How has the Second Step Program helped support your students in their social and emotional development?
Title 3 Cluster Event
Hilltop will be hosting a Title 3 event on April 21st 6:00-7:30 for our English Learner families. We would like to open this to the whole North County Cluster.
The event would include the following:
- Language and academic activities for children
- Parent information on attendance including when and when not to send your child, information from our PPW, and other valuable resources for attendance improvement
- Know Your Rights Workshop including a Q&A from Waleska Casiano (and her team) from Mid Atlantic Legal and Immigration Services
- Meet & Greet with Jose Cruz, Anne Arundel Police Department Hispanic Liaison
What we need from you:
Promote the event! Hilltop will be creating flyers to share throughout the cluster, as well as sending home Connect Ed messages and emails with a link for families to RSVP to the event. Additionally, we will need teachers/ESOL teachers to help plan activities for students (number needed will be dependent on RSVP response).
It would be great to see school admin, teachers, ESOL teachers, and bilingual facilitators at the event to show support of out English Learner families. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in your school participating in or if you have addition questions.
Math Updates:
This week we will be meeting with the Primary Teachers. We look forward to planning out your math content for MP3 and discussing ways that we are able to support both you and your students.
Don't forget...SLOs need to be approved by Friday. Please reach out to your SLO Coach!
Reading Updates:
February is Library Lovers Month
#LoveMyLibrary
We celebrated our readers who completed their winter challenge in reading or math with a hot cocoa party !
During CP primary teachers completed their F&P miscue analysis and made conferring plans.Teachers also completed the month to month growth chart to monitor student progress. We are looking forward to upcoming collaborative planning sessions where we will share the new Diagnostic checklist and how to use it with an individual student or group. Please reach out to your Literacy Team if you need anything.
Social & Emotional Updates:
This week we had 2 members of the countywide MTSS team come and observe Pre-K circles. Great job to Amberlea and Nisa. Kathy and Megan were very impressed with the modifications you are making to support our youngest learners build community. We will have additional opportunities for feedback on Feb. 10th and Feb. 18th. If you are especially interested in showing off your class circle, please email me and I will schedule someone to come participate.
From the Principal's Desk
Thank you for an amazing 2nd Quarter. I have a few updates as we move into 3rd Quarter.
Report Cards
Report Cards will be printed on Monday and placed in your mailbox. As we move into the 3rd Quarter, we will be working on comments and how to best support our students. More information to come and thank you for making the corrections.
Student Behavior
Although we have seen challenging behaviors, the "minors" ( insubordination, disrespect) are teacher managed behaviors. Use your Choice Board, schedule parent conferences, call for after-school detention and use a buddy system. Karyn and I will be meeting about how to best support you and how you can support your classroom. Additional information:
1. Recess cannot be taken away from students. We cannot have whole classes losing recess.
2. We don't talk negative about students. You try walking in their shoes..
3. Choose your battles.. There is research about quiet lines and a prison culture. We need safe hallways, but we don't need silent.
Equity Professional Development
Wednesday will be our contractual long day and our Equity PD. Casey will email you an agenda early next week. Please see below:
1. We will start at 7:45 on Weds. Please sign-up for morning and afternoon snacks
2. Our afternoon session will start in 1:45.
3. Please come with an open mind . Our Spirit Day will be denim and orange.
