8th Graders Learn about Supply and Demand
Recently in Mrs. Ackerman's 8th grade social studies class, students learned about the economic concept of supply and demand. Each student identified the most valuable item they had with or on them in class and then set a price at which they were willing to sell the item. The students then observed how many of the same items were in ready supply and how many were unique. They discussed how to set a price when there is no competition versus when a product is in high demand. They walked through different scenarios where they had to decide the price of an item based on its supply and demand.
The concept of supply and demand is invaluable not only as students study industrialization in South Carolina but also how it applies to their lives today through the increases in the price of gas, groceries and other items they value.
