Health Office
Dear Brookside Families,
I hope everyone has a wonderful “sick free” weekend. There are a few topics to address:
School Absences
This is a kind reminder that if your child is absent from school, please call the absentee line stating your child’s name, teacher and reason for the absence (stomachache, fever, cold, etc.). This helps the main office and myself to track certain illnesses that might be prevalent at this time. Confidentiality is always maintained. Please remind your child hand-washing is the single most effective way to prevent and reduce the transmission of illnesses. The absentee line telephone number is 201-664-9000, prompt “1”.
Health Classes
Lessons are being introduced next week to all grade levels and are based upon your child’s developmental level and grade. Most lessons are brief and contain a video and/or activity. The first lesson will be on Personal Hygiene, which ends up being a perfect segway to my next topic, body odor.
Older Children and Body Odor
How do you bring up the topic of body odor without embarrassing or insulting someone? This can be a difficult topic to discuss so I am asking for your assistance. Many teachers have asked me to come into the classroom and talk about body odor. I think this is a perfect time for you to talk to your children as well. Please remind older children that their bodies are changing, they are sweating and moving more, therefore, they may experience body odor. Please talk to your children about showering daily, wearing clean clothes, and using deodorant (that contains an antiperspirant). If your child has not started using deodorant and it’s it’s about the time, take them out shopping and have them pick out their own deodorant. Children like to do this! I attached a short video clip from The Doctors Show.

Middle School Expansion
A true middle school supports the academic, developmental, and social emotional growth of the whole child. Bringing together students in grades 6-8 will afford Westwood Regional School District students a complete program and strong foundation for a successful high school experience and future.
