Patriot Pride
#riseup!
Hello Future Patriot Families,
My name is Holly Flora and I serve as the principal of Liberty Bell Middle School. We are looking forward to having your child with us next year! I wanted to go ahead and send out a welcome letter and give you a heads up about what is to come!
All students who attend both Liberty Bell and Indian Trail will receive a letter that will be mailed at the end of next week that informs them of their team placement. Each child is placed on a team of four teachers (Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies). Team names are colors that represent a team of teachers. (For example, a child may get a letter informing them that they are on Team Violet that includes Mrs. Smith, Mr. Doe, Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Cohen.) Student letters will include their team name, the names of who their teachers will be next year, a school supply list and information regarding our Meet and Greet.
We invite you to join us for our LBMS Welcome Back Meet and Greet! For all teams housed in the Blue Building (Gold, Crimson, Navy, Gray, Yellow, Pink), we invite you to join us for our Meet and Greet from 4:00-6:00 on Monday, August 1st. Please use Parking Lot B (Freedom Hall Parking Lot) and enter through the doors at the plaza. LBMS staff will be on hand to direct you to teams and classrooms.
For all teams housed in the Red Building (Maroon, Turquoise, Green, Orange, Purple) and Patriot Academy, we invite you to join us for our Meet and Greet from 4:00-6:00 Tuesday, August 2nd. Please use Parking Lot C (Parking Lot C is in front of the school) and enter through the doors to the Red Building. LBMS staff will be on hand to direct you to teams and classrooms.
Again, you will know your child's team placement when you receive your letter, which will be mailed at the end of next week.
We will not be distributing chrome books at our Meet and Greets. Instead, we will be distributing chrome books by team during the first week of school. There will be no chrome book fee for students this year.
Johnson City Transit forms will be available for families to pick up and fill out to be returned the first day of school. Please understand that your child may NOT ride a school bus until Transit has time to process the form and return it to the student
School Supply lists will be mailed with Team letters and will also be available at our Meet and Greet.
We can't wait to meet you and see all of our returning students again soon! If you have questions, please feel free to call the school office and we are happy to help.423-232-2192.
Sincerely,
Holly Flora, LBMS Principal

Rising 7th Graders: Updated Vaccination Record
Please remember that all rising 7th graders must have an updated vaccination record on file with the school. Incoming 7th graders must have received a TDAP vaccination prior to the first day of school, unless there is a religious exemption or not deemed appropriate by a medical provider. Students will not be able to remain in class without an updated vaccination record. (Please note that this does not include COVID shots.)
The Johnson City Board of Education voted to change the Johnson City Schools’ grading system (Policy 4.600) for grades 3-12 to align with recent legislation passed by the Tennessee Legislature. Both SB0388 and HB0324 passed unanimously in both the state house and senate.
The new grading scale for grades 3-12 will be a 10-point scale, instead of a seven-point scale. Students will earn an A if they score between 90-100. The change was to provide more access to scholarships and to align the high school grading scale with colleges and universities. The change to the grading scale also puts Tennessee in line with the grading scales of the majority of the country.
While Senate Bill 0388 and House Bill 0324 only affected grades 9-12, district officials believe having a consistent grading scale throughout grades 3-12 will benefit families and students as well as standardize grading expectations for teachers.
The new grading scale will be as follows for all students in grades 3-12.
- A: 90 to 100
- B: 80 to 89
- C: 70 to 79
- D: 60 to 69
- F: 0 to 59
Students in grades K-2 will continue to be evaluated using a standards-based system.
Latin System Honors for grades 9-12
This new 10-point grading scale will not affect advanced coursework offering additional rigor points, as it will still be calculated with additional percentage points to calculate the semester average. Also, starting next year, Science Hill will use a new Latin System for honors recognition at graduation. They will use the following Latin System based on weighted GPA:
Summa Cum Laude – 4.25 and Above
Magna Cum Laude – 4.00 – 4.24
Cum Laude – 3.75 – 3.99
