A Message from Mr. Young
The State's Division of Federal Programs used the following criteria, based on the previous two years of academic performance (PSSA) data: Schools that were in the top 5% in Achievement in the two most recently completed academic years OR schools that were in the top 5% for Growth in the two most recently completed academic years. Blain qualified based on our outstanding growth data, that has us rated at a maximum 100 on ELA, Math, and Science.
This recognition and award was earned by our fantastic students and amazing staff. These groups have shown that hard work, determination, perseverance, and a positive attitude allow you to achieve greatness.
Mrs. O'Toole's Reading Corner
Did you know that children spend approximately 80% of their waking hours (including weekends and holidays) outside of school? That’s why educating children takes a team effort! You, as parents, know your children THE best! You know their likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. YOU were their first teachers – showing them how to walk, teaching them their first words, colors, shapes, and letters! When your child enters school, it is important that WE all work together. Parent & Family Engagement is a shared responsibility in which families and schools commit to working together to support and educate students. One of the best ways we can work as a team is by having good communication. Emails, phone calls, newsletters, notes home, and face-to-face talks during conferences are just some of the ways that we can keep the lines of communication open.
Congratulations to Gregory Loy and Ryan Brogan-Spacht for completing last month’s challenge “Guess the Missing Drink!” They both earned a free book. Congratulations are also extended to Brantley Pierce, Caleb Reisinger, Brayden Smith, and Kloe Strong for getting “caught reading!” They, too, got to choose a book and have their pictures hanging out in the hallway. When you catch your child reading at home, snap a picture and send it to me at sotoole@westperry.org.

News from the Nurse
By keeping your child home when they show signs of illness, you are minimizing exposure to other kids and preventing further spread of illness.
If your child has any of the following, you should keep him home unless symptom-free for 24 hours or on antibiotics for the same amount of time:
- Fevers (anything greater than 100 F). Please refrain from giving Tylenol or Motrin and sending your child off to school anyway; that is not really the best thing for your child or the kid who sits next to her at school.
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea more than twice in a day.
- Coughing with significant mucous production or difficulty breathing.
- Strep throat or signs concerning for strep throat including fevers, sore throat and headache.
- Eye infection Please send a doctor’s note stating the child is no longer contagious.
- Rash When a rash is accompanied by fevers or a general sense of malaise, it is usually best to see the doctor.
Outdoor Recess
- any "feels like" temperature at or above 32 degrees = normal outdoor recess
- "Feels like" temperature between 25 and 32 degrees = limited outdoor recess (half out, half in)
- any "feels like" temperature under 25 degrees = indoor recess
