How Can We Help Keep Our Children Safe Online?
We are vigilant about our children's physical safety. We don't let them play near busy highways. We would never allow them to go home with someone we don't know or to an unfamiliar place. When we are at parks or festivals, we watch them like a hawk. We keep tabs on who their friends are and where they are every minute of the day. Are we as safety conscious when they are using technology? Here's what we can do to help protect them. 1. Set your parental controls. We set boundaries where our children can play and how far out of sight they can be. Most electronic devices now offer parents limits they can set on device usage. From laptops to phones to tablets and smart TV's, take a look at your parental control options and determine what is best. There are always online helps and videos that can support you in this process. 2. View use and history. We watch our kids' practices and ballgames and performances. We need to do the same as they use technology. Come alongside your child and ask them to show you what they're playing or searching or doing on the device. (Invite them to do the same as you use your device.) If your child is using any kind of web browser, app or program, there is usually a feature for tracking the history. Randomly check their movements on their devices. This helps you know how much you can or can't trust your child. 3. Be a "follower" on your child's media. As you child becomes older, you will have to decide how much or little your child can do on social media platforms. (Know that I'm not advocating for using them one way or another.) This could be anything from group texts to chat groups. The options for social media change daily. When we couple our permission for our child with our own admission into the group, it provides guidance, support, and accountability for our kids. Children can allow us to be the "bad guys" and they can tell their friends "My mom/dad is watching so I can't do that." Our goal is to be the "guide on the side" during their upper elementary and teenage years so they can make great decisions later when they leave home. Safety is always our greatest priority for our children. Let's frame their online safety in the same way we think about their physical and emotional safety. As we read today's headlines, the truth is that those aspects of kids' lives (and our own) are becoming more and more interwoven. Let's commit to keep them safe.
Strength and Blessings to You,
Mr. Maness,
