One Chip Challenge and other spicy foods

Like many schools today, we have a few students who have participated in the viral “One Chip Challenge” here at school. The challenge is to eat a particularly hot/spicy chip that, in our building, has caused several students to need to go to the heath office for burning eyes, burning tongue and upset stomachs. Obviously, we do not want these extraordinary spicy chips, powders or peppers in our building as it causes a disruption to our academic day. Please talk about this as a family, and join us as we remind students that it is not a good idea to accept food from a classmate that has an unknown origin. We also encourage you to talk about social media and these types of viral challenges in general. In our work as a Chippewa community, we will continue to work with students on being discerners of information and employing critical thinking skills when it comes to social media and peer influence.

Science Olympiad Update

We are looking for a parent or two to volunteer to coach the Chippewa Science Olympiad teams. We have a science teacher who is willing to facilitate communication to students at school, secure practice spaces, and be a general resource for the parent coaches, but would not actually coach the team(s). If you are interested in coaching Science Olympiad, please reach out to Patrick Shellum, our Co-Curricular Coordinator at patrick.shellum@moundsviewschools.org or at 651-621-6412. If you would like to know more about what coaching would entail, please click on this link to be taken to the Minnesota Science Olympiad website.

8th Grade - PreACT Testing - Wednesday, October 26th

The PreACT8/9 is an assessment from ACT that simulates the ACT testing experience by providing students early exposure to ACT test-quality questions and predictive score ranges on the familiar 1-36 scale. This helps students get comfortable with the testing experience and understand how they’re doing in core subjects. It also helps parents and educators identify areas where additional support might be necessary. During periods 1 - 4, on October 26th, Chippewa 8th graders will be given this test.

Click HERE for a letter that fully explains this assessment and the benefits of taking the assessment.

Additional information can be found on the ACT website at act.org/preact8-9. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your student's dean.

Patriots Pen

Do you enjoy writing? Do you like having others read your words? Would you like to get paid to write? The Brooker-Edmond VFW Post 724 is sponsoring a Patriot’s Pen essay writing contest for students in grades 6-8. The essay’s theme this year is “My Pledge to Our Veterans”. Student Services will have entry forms, which tell the specific requirements for these essays, available for you. Prizes are awarded locally, and you could also qualify for district, state, and national prizes if your essay is selected. ELA Teacher Mrs. Sorensen can answer questions you may have. The entries will be collected in the front office for pickup by 10/28 so we can get them to the VFW Post representatives by the due date on the form. Share your thoughts and writings!
