RVES School Counselor Corner

September 2020

Welcome back!

Greetings and welcome to the 2020-2021 school year from your school counselors, Mrs. Alladin and Mrs. Felipe! This year, we are fortunate to have a school counseling intern, Ms. Denbrook.

As the school counselors at Riverview Elementary School, we help ALL students with social/emotional development, self-management, social skills, maintaining friendships, and we also provide support during various transitions in a student's life (e.g. family change, moving, grief, etc.). While these direct and indirect services might look different this year, we are so excited to be back at Riverview Elementary for another year to continue to work with the students, parents, and community members of Farmington!

Supporting your child's mental health as they transition back to school

While everyone is getting settled back into a new back-to-school routine, whether learning from home or back in-school, children are still facing major changes and disruptions to daily life. Many emotions come with these new transitions, and we are here to help! We are meeting with students individually either in-school or virtually via Google Meet, to help process the many feelings that come with the changes and challenges you children are faced with. Please reach out if your child needs additional support!

Free Social-Emotional Skills Webinar

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is a trusted source for knowledge about high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL). Every Friday CASEL offers free SEL webinars. The webinar on Friday, October 2nd (Noon-1pm CST) is relevant to where many of us find ourselves as parents and caregivers this school year. This upcoming webinar is teaching healthy emotion regulation strategies to support the well-being and academic success of children. Kids learning these skills now will help them throughout their lives!

Fall Climate Survey

During the month of October, school counselors are working on completing the Riverview Elementary School Climate Survey. This survey will be completed by all students, and will allow us to identify student perceptions of the climate and culture within our school. It also allows us to better understand how your child feels about returning to school. Some fo the questions asked in this survey include:

- How did it feel being away from school?

- How do you feel about returning to school?

- Do you feel like you have friends at school?

- Do you feel like students are kind to one another?

In addition to determining strengths, this survey will help us identify areas for improvement and how we can enhance our school counseling program. This survey not only allows us to get to know each child and better understand their perception of the school climate, it allows your child to better understand the counselor’s role in the school. We look forward to this project and spending time with each of your kiddos!
