Nursing Note: The EYES Have It!
COVID-19 has turned our world upside down. ALL of us are spending hours in front of screens each day. Parents and caregivers are working virtually, checking their phones frequently for public health updates, and making sure their children are keeping up with schoolwork. Teachers’ and students’ classrooms now exist virtually; they are exchanging ideas via computer screens for hours on end. All of us are having to do much of our socializing from behind a screen. Zoom birthdays and Netflix watching parties are quickly becoming the norm.
Medical experts agree that a negative effect of so much screen time is the impact on our vision health. Too much screen time can cause:
· Eye fatigue (tiredness)
· Eye pain
· Headaches
We understand how important it is to do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19. It is a benefit of living in 2020 that we have the opportunity to work, learn, and socialize in a virtual setting… but we need to protect our eyes. Here are some things that you can do to take care of your eyes:
- Take screen breaks. In-between classes avoid looking at screens (including your phone) and take a short walk or read. You can listen to music, an audiobook, or podcast. The important thing is to be giving your eyes a break.
- Set boundaries. Decide as a family when you are done with schoolwork, television, and phones for the day. Some families have screen-free zones (dining table, bedroom, etc.). Make the rules realistic. If your only alarm is on your phone, making the bedroom a screen-free zone is probably not a great plan.
- Get regular eye check-ups. Most pediatric offices include a vision exam as part of a routine physical. Optometrists and ophthalmologists are vision specialists that can do more extensive eye exams. If you are having any of the above symptoms or you notice that you are squinting or having difficulty seeing your schoolwork, then a vision exam is a smart choice.
