Principal's Message
Last Thursday and Friday, Mr. Bundy, Maker Space Staff Developer, and Mr. Samuelson, Innovation Strategist, taught our K -5th Grade students and their teachers how to incorporate some cool maker space related technology into their classrooms. Mr. Bundy and Mr. Samuelson taught one class per grade level while all the teachers of that grade level observed, asked questions, and took notes so they could teach the same lesson to their own students.
For K-2nd Grade classes, students had the opportunity to experience coding through the use of a variety of application and toys. Students tried Cubetto (wooden coding toy), code-a-pillar( caterpillar coding toy), and Osmo (digital feedback for playing with actual objects). For 3rd through 5th Grade, students experienced building and coding with Lego Robotics. The Lego Robotics builds and inquiry lessons are aligned with the Common Core Standards in Math, Science, and Language Arts.
All students and teachers were excited by the possibility these coding tools would bring to the classroom. We hope to purchase these items perhaps with the help of the PTO for our Maker Space at Oak Hills.
Have a wonderful weekend and let's hope for a little more sun!!
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

Our OBOB Team will go to State Finals
The OBOB team representing Oak Hills, the Peachy Lychees (Sara Biju, Kristen Le, Tara Shenoy Kudpi, Ananya Badawadagi, and Evelyn Ross) will be competing the State Competition on April 8. Our team beat out 74 teams in grades 3-5 from across Region 1 including 33 schools from Beaverton School District, 11 from Hillsboro School District and others from Tigard-Tualatin, Sherwood, Seaside, private schools and schools from Columbia and Tillamook counties!
When the girls were asked how they prepared for the OBOB tournaments, they said they started reading the OBOB books in the summer. Most of the members read all 16 books and practiced with questions that they created or found on various websites. They celebrated their victory with hot chocolate time with the principal.
Thank you for the Assemblies!
Last Tuesday, we invited Body Vox to perform for our students. Led by Emmy Award winning choreographers Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, BodyVox creates productions rich in imagery, athleticism and humor. Our students were mesmerized by the performance. Next Friday, we will have Heidi Schulz who wrote Hook’s Revenge present to 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders. Hook’s Revenge was an OBOB book this year. We thank the PTO for providing funds for our assemblies.
