Understanding the FAFSA
Beginning October 1, 2017 students will be able to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA provides colleges and universities, selected by the student, financial information. There are several programs of grants, loans and work study administered by Federal Student Aid and each has specific eligibility requirements. The FAFSA application provides all the information needed to determine your eligibility for all of these programs. The application is processed and sent to the post-secondary institution you designate. The financial aid office at the school then determines what the type and amount of financial award you can receive.
In recent years the submission date for the FAFSA changed. Students use to begin submitting the FAFSA in January. Now, senior students may begin submitting the FAFSA on October 1!!! The earlier submission date is a permanent change. Students are required to report income information from an earlier tax year so parent/guardian information and assistance may be needed.
For example, on the 2017 –18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) reported their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information. This is called prior, prior year information. For 2017/18 seniors entering college in fall 2018, tax information for the 2016 year will be needed.
The official financial aid forms (FAFSA) for high school students are available online: www.fafsa.ed.gov). Please be aware that there are some companies who will try to charge you to complete the FAFSA. You should NEVER pay to have this free form completed.
