Principal's Corner
This week was the start of our 12 Days of Christmas. It has been such a joy to see all the happy faces in our students and staff, as they are all enjoying being festive each day with the count down of dressing in Christmas cheer. I look forward to the next two weeks, as our schools will continue to bring the holiday cheer to everyone as we continue our count down.
We have begun engaging students in middle of the year assessments for DIBELS and MAPs at the elementary school this week, and will complete the testing before we leave on Christmas Break. It is exciting to see the growth our students have made this year. When testing is completed, the elementary staff teams gather to identify strengths and needs of students, and develop collaborative plans to foster success in every student.
Our 2nd quarter ends on December 16th, and 3rd quarter begins on January 4th. Please know that during Christmas Break students are able to take AR quizzes that will go toward their 3rd quarter AR reading goals. The time at home is a great time for families to read together, and for students to dive into books. I encourage students and families to take advantage of this time and go on adventures in the wonderful places books can take us.
Have a wonderful Little Jay day!

Nurse's Note
Dear Parents,
Sleep deprivation is a nationwide issue and is seen many times in our students. Here is information for your students and for you as well, is sleep is a problem for you as well
Sleep in children
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention How much sleep do I need for infants, children, and teenagers need the following sleep in every 24 hours:
● Up to 3 months of age: 14 to 17 hours
● From 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours
● From 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours
● From 3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours
● From 6 to 12 years: 9 to 12 hours
● From 13 to 18 years: 8 to 10 hours
● Keep to the same sleeping and waking times, including weekends.
● Set a bedtime for when you will feel sleepy and that will leave at least 7 hours for sleeping.
● Avoid daytime naps that reduce bedtime sleepiness.
● Avoid alcohol, caffeine, tobacco smoking, and heavy meals before bedtime.
● Establish a regular winding down ritual, which could include a bath, reading or meditation.
● Try to avoid tension before sleeping, for example, heated discussions.
● Avoid watching TV, browsing the Internet, and so on, before bedtime, and do not do these activities in bed. TAKE THOSE ELECTRONICS AWAY, SET TIMERS ON THEM.
● Keep the bedroom quiet, dark, and cool, with comfortable bedclothes.
● If you cannot sleep after 20 minutes of trying, reduce the association with an inability to sleep by going to another room and read in a chair until you feel sleepy.
● Exercise may be beneficial for sleep. Do vigorous exercise during the day and relaxing exercise, such as yoga, before bed.
● Sleep meditation may be a useful tool for many.
● Sleep deprivation may also make us more susceptible to illnesses including colds, flu and covid.
● Please see links below regarding cold versus flu versus covid.
Cafeteria Corner
Hello Mancos Families,
I want to remind everyone that the supply/chain issues that the rest of the country is experiencing has affected us from the beginning of the school year, but seems to get increasingly worse as the year moves along. This means that our menus are more subject to change now more than ever. Unfortunately, menu items may have to be changed the day of service depending on deliveries. We are getting reasonable substitutions for the menu items we order, however, we are noticing that some items are not comparable to what we have put out on the menu. Please be patient if your student is not happy with certain items, as this is 100 % out of our control.
Our distributors are working very hard with our manufacturers to ensure that the products we receive are comparable, and we are all hoping that we will begin to see this turn around very soon. If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s meals, please contact me.
Thank you,

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT)
P-EBT cards have been sent out. Many are asking what these cards are and why you might have received one in your child’s name. As I mentioned before, when you apply for free and reduced meals, you may be eligible to receive P-EBT benefits. If you have received this card, your household qualified for extra benefits that were intended to supplement families for meals on days that school is not in session during the pandemic. This includes weekends, and benefits have been extended to June 2022. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
If you have any questions please contact me at 970-533-7745 or jfogel@mancosre6.edu

Mancos Giving Tree
Hello Mancos Community Members!
I am writing to let you know that the Mancos Giving Tree project is gearing up for the 2021 Christmas season and we want to ask for your assistance to help us make this year an outstanding success.
This is the 24th year that the Mancos Giving Tree will be giving gifts anonymously to needy Mancos residents. I have enclosed an application form for you to copy and distribute to ANYONE you feel could use some extra help during the Christmas season. Please note that the forms have changed. If you personally know of someone who would benefit from this program, please complete the back, have them complete the front, and return it to one of the locations mentioned on the form.
We ask that gift recipients be residents of the 81328 zip code or attend Mancos schools. All shopping, wrapping and delivery are done anonymously – no names are used by the volunteers.
Speaking of volunteers, we need many! As the saying goes, many hands make light work. Please let your members know about this project and have them contact me if they would like to help in any way.
Donations are also very much welcome. Financial contributions can be mailed to Giving Tree c/o Mancos Valley Resources, PO Box 204, Mancos CO 81328. Mancos Valley Resources is our 501(c)3 umbrella organization. All contributions are tax deductible and receipts will be furnished upon request.
Gifts and non-financial contributions, such as wrapping supplies, can be dropped off at Colorado Ranch and Home Realty, Coldwell Banker Realty, and The Mancos Artisans. Drop offs at the Visitor’s Center by appointment only.
Thank you for your assistance with this wonderful project!
