Abrams Parent News
March 19, 2021
Hello Abrams Families!
It's hard to believe that it's already the middle of March! While this year has been one of challenges, we are so grateful that we have been able to have students in the building, learning with our teachers!
We are excited to announce that enrollment for our Summer Learning Institute (SLI) is now open. This year, SLI is free for all students who are currently enrolled in the district. SLI will run for 5 weeks this summer, mornings only, and is designed to help students make up ground in their learning. Please register your child if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity! SLI will be held at Abrams Elementary School this summer. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfgMxAsZnCzQQHS969cCr2NgTVfiNkOAPYR2K3zHFa0zIXcbw/viewform
We are encouraging all of our families to participate in our virtual family night, scheduled for April 6, 2021. All families who sign up to participate in Family night will receive a free pizza on April 6, 2021. Parents will be able to drive by the front of the school and receive their pizza to take home and enjoy during family night. You must RSVP for a pizza by March 29st. Please see the link below to sign up. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4fa8a92aaafbc43-abrams
As a reminder, if your child currently attends Abrams as an Out of District or Out of Zone student, you must apply for their continued enrollment for next year. If you do not live in the 4000 quarters on Fort Carson, you must reapply for your child to attend Abrams next year. Considerations for OOD or OOZ enrollment are contingent on behavior and attendance. You can complete that information online: https://www.ffc8.org/Page/1
After Spring Break, we will be sending our Intent to Enroll forms for next year. We ask that all families complete this document so that we can plan for students for next year.
As we enter the last quarter of the school year, we will continue to follow all health and safety protocols at Abrams. This includes cohort grouping students, wearing masks, maintaining appropriate social distancing guidelines, handwashing, cleaning and sanitizing. Our students continue to impress with their adherence to mask-wearing and following our safety guidelines!
We hope that you all have the opportunity to spend time with your families over the upcoming break! Your children have earned a well-deserved break!
Sincerely,
Lois Skaggs, Principal

Meet our new SRO - Officer Buck
Hi, my name is Michael Buck. I am the newly assigned School Resource Officer for Abrams Elementary School. I was asked to introduce myself to the staff, family members, and important students of Abrams. So, a little bit of myself.
I have worked a whole gambit of careers over my “young” life that gives me a unique look into being able to keep your children safe while attending Abrams. First off, I started my life after high school graduation as an American Soldier. I served for approximately 9 years on Active duty, In-Active reserves, and Active reserves. While in the Army, I was a military police officer and also worked a stint as a Military Police Investigator as well.
After the Army, I had a unique job called a Public Safety Officer. Here, I was state certified after lots of different schools as a Police Officer, Fire Fighter, and Emergency Medical Technician (which kept certified for over 9 years and worked part time at the local ambulance company). From this Agency, I went to other Agencies and after all said and done have approximately 19+ years of law enforcement experiences and training. Through this time, I have worked as a School Resource Officer to a Gang Officer to a Patrol Training Officer (training new officers). With my last police department, I was also able to work towards receiving my Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and Associates of Science in Criminal Justice.
After being involved in an accident on duty responding to someone trying to kick in a front door of a residence, I was medically retired in WA State. I then moved to Colorado to be closer to my family. While living in Colorado, I began to recoup and go through lots of medical treatments to get back to doing what I loved. This wasn’t an easy journey. In Colorado, I have worked in both Adult and Youth Corrections and Armed Security. It helped take care of my family, but was not something I truly enjoyed.
Luckily, I have been given the opportunity again to do what I love. Law Enforcement. Especially with an important task as keeping our Youth and Future safe. If you have any questions or even see me around, please say hi or wave. Look forward to helping with keeping the Youth and Community of Fort Carson safe. Best wishes and stay safe!
Summer Learning Institute (SLI)
Our district will be hosting "D8 Summer Learning Institute" for free this year and the program has been extended to 5 weeks - June 7th - July 16th (with a break June 28-July 2nd). We highly suggest registering for the event as the program will support learning in math, ELA, and specials classes. Summer Learning institute will be in-person. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to your classroom teacher. Registration is open. Register your child today.
Student Drop off and Pick Up Procedures
We ask that all parents on school grounds wear face coverings that cover both their nose and mouth at all times.
Arrival:
We are asking that if at all possible, families consider accessing Abrams from the back of the school, either using O’Connell from the south side of Abrams or Hare Ave from the north side of Abrams.
When coming through the carpool line, please do NOT drop students off in front of the kindergarten playground. Please pull all the way forward and drop students off in front of the school. This helps us to keep the carpool line moving and get cars off of the surrounding streets.
If you need to get out of the car to assist your child, please park in the lot behind the school off of Wetzel Avenue and walk with your child to their building access door. Please do not get out of your vehicle in front of the school as it holds up the line.
Please do not allow students to exit your vehicle at the bus loading zones at the rear of the school. All students being dropped off by car must be dropped off at the front of the school for safety.
Dismissal:
Parents picking up students at dismissal time should park in the lot at the rear of the school and proceed to either the kindergarten blacktop (Kindergarten students only) or the basketball court. Students must present their dismissal card to the teachers on duty before leaving for the day.

Hi Families,
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.. A time to recognize the growing prevalence of brain injuries, empower the community and destigmatize the injuries.
There are an estimated 2.8 million people treated for traumatic brain injury or brain injuries in the United States each year. Children are at the highest risk of brain injuries.
Brain injuries range from mild to severe; concussions are considered a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain.
Motor vehicle accidents, falls and sports injuries are common causes of concussions. Though any sport that involves contact can also result in a concussion, particularly football, hockey and soccer are the most common.
Signs and symptoms of a concussion
Signs and symptoms that may occur shortly after sustaining a concussion may include:
· Headache or feeling of pressure in the head
· Temporary loss of consciousness
· Inability to concentrate
· Lethargy
· Dizziness
· Nausea and vomiting
· Ringing in the ears
Treatment options for concussions
All forms of concussions are serious. It’s important to seek medical attention from a local urgent care facility or emergency room as soon as possible to avoid complications. It’s very likely your urgent care or emergency room physician will recommend follow-up care and treatment from a primary care physician. If you play sports regularly, it’s especially important to seek continued care from a medical professional that is specially trained and experienced in the assessment and management of sports-related concussions.

When your student gets a bump to their head a parent/guardian is always notified either by the office staff or the nurse. The office staff or nurse will send home with student a head bump form with signs and symptoms to look for, if your child experiences any of the symptoms, it is best to call their doctor for advice or medical care if needed. If student was hit hard in the head or nose area we will ask that you pick up your student so that you can monitor them for symptoms while they are resting at home.
