Principal's Points
Hi North families and happy March!
I hope you are as excited as I am about the spring weather on the way. It is a great time to "Sharpen the Saw," the 7th Habit of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. Fresh air and outside exercise are two ways to keep our saws sharp. I have also reminded students that another way to keep sharp is to get a good night's sleep. Research shows that elementary-aged students need 9-12 hours of sleep a night.
This month is the start of the state assessment season. We began this week in grade 3 with IREAD3 our students focused and worked hard to do their very best.
The window for ILEARN for grades 3-5 is April 19 - May 14. I ask that you schedule appointments around the testing dates if possible. Students seem to do better when they take them with their class.
As a parent and educator, I am concerned about how vulnerable our children are when it comes to the internet and social media. Many of our children are becoming very knowledgable about ALL the new social media programs available, some which are not safe or appropriate. I have heard about some very concerning sites and Apps. Common Sense Media is a great resource for you to stay knowledgable. All children need guidance being cyber safe. We teach it at school and I would encourage parents to talk cyber safety at home and periodically browse histories on phones, apps, computers, and tablets.
I would like to thank the North PTO officers, for all their support. It has been tricky trying to think of opportunities to support staff and students the officers have been creative and flexible. They are always willing to do whatever it takes to get things going. Thanks to all your help with PTO fundraising efforts, we are looking forward to our Fun Run in May!. Not only will we be able to earn some much-needed money but we will be able to get students outside..
Finally, just a reminder as we get closer to spring break and the end of the 9 weeks make sure you are washing your children's cloth masks. They should be treated and washed much like undergarments.
Have a great weekend!

Mr. Lugo's Brainbuster
Phoenix Rollins from Mrs. Scott-Stewart's class is the winner of the brainbuster. Phoenix wins a pizza party for her entire class! Congratulations Phoenix!
Lugo's Brainbuster:
How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn’t bounce off anything? There is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it back to you.
Write your answer on a piece of paper and put it in the jar in the office. If your name is drawn and you have the right answer, you will win a prize from Mr. Lugo.
Virtual Learners
I just have to take time to celebrate our 3rd grade online learners who took IREAD-3 this week. You all rocked it! I had so much fun seeing so many smiling faces at the Community Center. I had the most joy seeing some of you get to see your online teacher in person. Way to go third graders! And a big thank you to our third grade families who took time to bring your child to the community center or school building for testing. Also- I was able to sit in with future journalists in 4th grade today as IndyStar reporter, MJ Slaby, shared her journey into journalism with our online fourth grade students. They asked such sophisticated questions. Way to go online fourth grade learners!
State Testing for Online Learners
Watch for information to come at the end of next week to share more about ILEARN for our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade learners.
K-2 Early Literacy Assessment
Our K-2 online learners will be given various assessments throughout the remainder of the school year. These assessments measure foundational reading skills and are utilized to identify any skills a child may not have mastered yet and helps us understand where your child is in their learning and how to respond. We are also giving these assessments to our in person learners yet for online, they have to be administered in a one-on-one setting. Your child’s teacher will share information about scheduling as the school year progresses.

News from the Nurse
Kindergarten, 3rd and 5th Grade Vision Screenings. Each year all K, 3rd and 5th grade students in Noblesville Schools are screened for visual acuity, per Indiana public law. This screening procedure in no way replaces the complete medical evaluation given by your physician but is a fair assessment of visual acuity. Kindergarten screenings are now complete. Grades 3 and 5 will be done April 13-15, the week after Spring Break. Parents of students who do not pass the screening will be notified by referral. Any questions, please feel free to contact the school nurse.
Kids Heart Challenge
I am excited to tell you that North Elementary is carrying on our tradition of supporting the Heart Assocation this year by taking the Kids Heart Challange. We are excited to be able to partner with the AHA again to fight heart disease. AND this year your donations NOT ONLY go to fighting heart disease, but also to fight COVID. The Heart Association has pledged $2 million to fight COVID and research the damage it does to the heart.
Thank you for helping!
We will be doing our Heart Challenge from March 8, 2021- April 12, 2021. Students and families can raise funds from March 8th -April 12th. This year we will be all online or checks ONLY. No cash will be accepted at school. .
