Imagine; you’re in 2006 with your friends, wearing an outfit that looks like Hot Topic barfed all over you with Converse that is full of dirt, Sharpie writing, and cheap metal spikes. You all agreed to be at the cool kid skatepark over Myspace, and you brought Altoid Sours because you wanted to show your friends you can handle them. After a long day, you decide to go home, talk to your friends over this new thing called Facebook, and play Webkinz, even if it wasn’t cool. What music would go along with your day?
New Pagans is a band that once you listen to them, you can never get their songs out of your head. As a low-key underground U.K.-based indie rock band formed in 2016, has released an album called The Seed, The Vessel, The Roots and All in mid-March of 2021. Their style is reminiscent of 2000’s punk-rock or emo, and I am in love with it. The best thing about their style is how fitting it is in a lot of situations—you can dance to it, sing along, or just listen to and jam out. And yes, it would be fitting for that hypothetical day.
Although the trend of 2000’s emo/scene is mostly non-existent in early 2021, The Seed, The Vessel, The Roots and All does bring your brain back a few years and remind you of “rawr XD” and “1337”. This is the case with their song Bloody Soil, with an upbeat feeling of going to a skatepark to have fun and not worry about school or chores. Another great song by New Pagans is Its Darker, which has a more 80’s feel. Even if the individual songs convey different emotions, they all bring something to the new-aged indie rock table, but the lyrics can get quite repetitive.
I wish I could write about all the little things that make New Pagans, but if I did, this review would be longer than thousands of yardsticks lined up together because the music they make is that good. From the vocals to the instruments to the fact that they have been working on this for around 5 years makes their work incredible. As always, I'm Jerrymee Gamduton, signing off until the summer!
