Help Out with Explore More Day 2021!

As some of you may know, we received new guidance from the district that prevents us from having parent volunteers on site for Explore More Day. As we pivot to plan the event within these new guidelines, we'll need your help! Please sign up on the Google Doc if you're still able to help.

There is interest from VA teachers and parents in including VA students in Explore More Day, but we are waiting for more details from the district on how that might work.

Please reach out to Madison PTA President Beth Tatro with any questions.

Fourth and fifth graders will meet Thursdays - April 29, May 6 and May 13. Questions? Reach out to Christina Hull, Madison’s PACE teacher.

Madison Cares April Highlight: Local Food Pantries

Did you know that 1 in 6 kids in America goes to bed hungry each night? You can help those in need in our own community to have enough to eat every day.

Ways to help:

  • Collect non-perishable food items yourself to donate to a local pantry
  • Create a fundraiser to raise money to donate to a pantry! Money donated can go farther than private food purchases, because local pantries can buy in bulk to provide more food and healthier food for those in need.
  • Organize a food donation drive in your neighborhood! Pass out flyers with a date a time to have non-perishable items in bags outside of front doors. Coordinate with a local pantry, and drop off the donation bags curbside.

Reach out to one of these local Food Pantries to get started!

You can also help District 200 families in need through the Student Excellence Foundation Essential Needs Fund. Since March 2020, it has provided food, cold weather gear and learning resources for 12,075 families in our area.

April 26-30 is Giving DuPage Days, an online fundraiser that aims to raise at least $300,000 for more than 100 organizations in DuPage County, including many of the ones listed above.

Represent Madison on the DEI200 Committee - Sign Up to Be the School Liaison

To support continuity and alignment of DEI200's efforts, the committee is seeking at least one DEI liaison from each elementary and middle school in the district. The liaison will connect the work of DEI200 across the district. Responsibilities include attending monthly DEI200 committee meetings, meeting with Mr. Callahan and sharing information between Madison, the Madison PTA and DEI200. This is a year-long commitment for the 2021-2022 school year, and the time commitment is only 90 minutes per month. Read more about the DEI200 school liaison role here or contact Anjali Bharadwa to sign up.

More DEI200 Updates and Resources

DEI200's Book Club is underway but there is still time to catch up! We will read two books per year, with separate groups for adults and children based on grade level. To learn more, fill out this form or email the leader of the book club, Kelly Holden.

Community Conversations Join your fellow community members for a facilitated discussion in small groups to reflect on the issues brought up in the Talking About Race program series. This will be held by the library on May 6 at 7 p.m. Register through the Wheaton Public Library.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! You can help #StopAsianHate and learn more about AAPI cultures through these resources:

District 200 Updates

District 200 has received three rounds of federal funding to help respond to COVID. Money from the first two rounds went toward technology purchases, online curriculum and summer programming. It also allowed the district to reduce registration fees by 50% for the 2021-2022 school year. At its April 28 Committee of the Whole meeting, the board will decide how to use the third round of funding. Ideas include virtual offerings for the 2021-2022 school year, learning acceleration plan for academic and emotional learning, enhancements to curriculum programs and facilities, and technology needs. The meeting will be broadcast on the CUSD 200 YouTube channel.

On April 27 at 7 p.m. Dr. Doug Bolton will host a parent workshop - Positive Psychology and a Brighter Future. Parents will learn positive psychology strategies to help their families appreciate what has been learned from the pandemic and the opportunities before us as we plan for next year. Learn more and get the Zoom link.
