- Since McCellan's father was a renowned doctor Mccellan had a very good education
- He was educated at private schools and at home he had a tutor
- When he was 13 he entered the University of Pennsylvania
War with Mexico
- McClellan was promoted to captain in the cavalry
- After the war with Mexico he was assigned to West Point, where he taught military engineering
Illinois Central Railroad
- McClellan became the chief engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad
- Then he became the president of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad
Return to the Union Army
- McClellan returned to the army and became head of the Union Army in 1861
- As a great organizer he planned a defense of Washington that could not be broken
- He is remembered as a general that was slow to attack
- He went against Lincoln's wishes and hurt the Union cause several times
- Even though he wasn't a strong battle leader, he was a great organizer
Campaign Against Lincoln
- In 1864, near the end of the War, McClellan rain for President against Lincoln on a ticket of peace to end the War.
- His defeat showed that the North was determined to win the War
Governor of New Jersey
McClellan served as Governor of New Jersey from 1878-1881.
Death
- McClellan died on October 29, 1885.
- He died in Orange, New Jersey.
