‘GROWING GREATNESS GRANDEZA EN CRECIMIENTO'
LEARNING ACROSS BAKER PRAIRIE
GEOGRAPHY BEE
Today we held a Geography Bee. The competition began in 1989 in response to a lack of geographic knowledge amongst young people in the US. Twenty-one Baker Prairie students prepared and competed in the bee. The school champion is seventh grader, Jack Swanson. They won answering the following question:
Q: Teenager Greta Thunberg started a global movement bringing attention to climate change when she protested outside of her country’s Parliament House, located in the Gamla Stan district of what Swedish city?
A: Stockholm
CAREER FAIR
On Wednesday, March 15 BPMS hosted our virtual Career Fair. We started our day with an assembly with Kim Child. Ms. Child played college basketball, played professional basketball overseas and currently is an executive for Nike. She shared with students that hard work is what leads to success. Students spent time on Tuesday in Advisory preparing for the Career Fair by doing an interest survey and looking and looking at a menu of career videos to prepare for Wednesday. On Wednesday during Art/Band/CTE/Music, Health/PE and Social Studies classes students had the opportunity to get information about three careers they choose, watch career videos of their choosing, do a cost of living exercise, a college scavenger hunt, complete a reflection and provide feedback on their overall Career Fair experience. This was a great opportunity for students to begin thinking about their futures and the choices they might make during high school to be ready to take those next steps.
BPMS HOSTS STATE GOALBALL TOURNAMENT
Last Friday, March 3rd, Baker Prairie hosted the Oregon State Youth Goalball Tournament. Goalball is a team sport for athletes with visual impairments. Teams of three throw or roll the ball, which has bells inside, into the opponent’s goal. The players use the bells sound to pinpoint the ball’s
location and movement.
BAKER PRAIRIE CARE TEAM
One of our goals as a district is to provide equitable education for all our students and to "eliminate barriers, giving students what they need to succeed." At Baker Prairie, one of the steps we have taken to realize this goal is to assemble our BPMS Care Team. This group of parents, guardians, family members, staff, and other community members works together to meet the needs of Baker Prairie students as they arise throughout the school year.
How does it work? Our student interventionist, Brett Curtis, periodically sends out requests to the Care Team for items such as snacks, clothing, bedding, and school supplies. Team members reply if they are able to provide a new or gently used item to meet this request. Last year over 50 students benefited from the Care Team's support and generosity. If you are interested in joining, please contact Brett Curtis at brett.curtis@canby.k12.or.us.
