What a year!
It was a team effort to get books to students who were not able to come into the library. A total of 9,586 books went home over the past year! The older kids are now pros at placing holds for books they they're excited to read. The most requested books were the graphic novel series "Dog Man" and the biography, "All the Way to the Top."
Even though we learned outside of the library space this year, we grew so much during library class.
Kindergartners explored their emotions and learned about growth mindsets, internet safety, and how to use pictures to help them understand stories. They completed their very first research project to choose the best *imaginary* pet for our library. Our mascot, Paddy, gave our newest Primrose Pandas tours of the library itself from afar.
In 1st Grade students discovered their Best Selves and learned strategies to cope with big feelings. Students also explored how to handle their emotions when engaging with the digital world. The 1st graders learned about the diversity within communities by participating in the RI Latino Books Month Award. They had fun creating a class eBook with diagrams after researching and comparing animals using our PebbleGo database.
2nd Graders put a lot of effort into growing as Digital Citizens who are responsible, respectful, and safe online. They started to explore the concept of bias and learned about the power of representation with a Zoom visit from local author Anika Aldamuy Denise and helped to promote diverse books by sharing book reviews in our library catalog.
In their final year at Primrose, 3rd Graders learned how to evaluate different resources for reliable information, including images, databases, and websites. The students practiced formulating deep questions with the goal of submitting their curious query to a podcast. They explored and enjoyed books from the RICBA list. They ended their library experience by leaving a mark on the library collection, itself. They learned about the diversity gap in the publishing industry and on our shelves. They used databases to discover books to address the need. They wrote to stakeholders, including publishing companies, the school committee, the PTO, and our principal, to ask for funds to purchase the books for future Primrose students to have available in our library.
APICBA
For the past couple of years, our youngest students have had the opportunity to participate in the RI Latino Books Month Award. The books are selected by, authored by, and feature Latinx people. As they explore the books, students come to understand that the Latinx community, along with other populations, has diversity within it. After reading the nominees, our students, along with other young readers in RI, get to vote on their favorite story. This is the only book award that our primary-level students have the chance to participate in and we are interested in expanding their opportunities to build their cultural awareness.
In addition to other multicultural programs, we would like to build on the RI Latino Books Month Award model to celebrate the Asian and Pacific Islander members of our community. We are looking for volunteers to help design and pilot this experience at some K-3 schools. If you are interested in volunteering, please share your contact information here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScekaEeAkFPgDXzywz7LWC0YqemgbO3BrMQN1C3L3Ud8Mt6VA/viewform
If you would like to recommend a picture book by an Asian or Pacific Islander author and about an API character, please share your suggestion here: https://forms.gle/y95Q6qRFfvezMGTU8
Thank you for your support.
