Monday Message
From the desk of Dr. Harrell
November 11, 2019
Greetings,
I hope that each of you had a great weekend. Yesterday was Veteran’s Day and I saw wonderful and heartfelt accounts of recognition at many of our campuses. Veterans Day is a day for us to pay our respects to all those who have served. On this day we stand united to pay our respect for all those who served in the armed forces, our veterans. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. We celebrate and honor all of our veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
I want to say ‘Thank You’ to each one of our employees, board members, community members, family members and everyone else who served. I received the following statistics yesterday morning in an email from Sara Bixler a former UCISD administrator. The information demonstrates the incredible effort of just one generation of Americans, men and women, who sacrificed to ensure victory.
During the 3-1/2 years of World War II that started with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 and ended with the surrender of Germany and Japan in 1945, "We the People of the U.S.A." produced the following:
22 aircraft carriers, 8 battleships, 48 cruisers, 349 destroyers, 420 destroyer escorts,
203 submarines, 34 million tons of merchant ships, 100,000 fighter aircraft, 98,000 bombers,
24,000 transport aircraft, 58,000 training aircraft, 93,000 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces
105,000 mortars, 3,000,000 machine guns and 2,500,000 military trucks.
We put 16.1 million men in uniform in the various armed services, invaded Africa, invaded Sicily and Italy, won the battle for the Atlantic, planned and executed D-Day, marched across the Pacific and Europe, developed the atomic bomb and, ultimately, conquered Japan and Germany.
Again ‘I want to Thank All Those who have Served.’
Have a Wonderful Week!
I Believe in ‘U’SA

Facebook “Shout Out” to Judy Holmes
The following Facebook posting was posted by Melissa Ahlschlager, parent to Dalton Student Brooklyn in Ms. Judy Holmes class. “I need to do a shout out to Judy Holmes, Brooklyn’s teacher. This morning Brooklyn went out the door with one shoe on and one in her hand (running late). Well, I dropped off Emmett and Roman and when I got to work with Brooklyn, she couldn’t find her other shoe. Y’all, I tore apart my car looking for that shoe and did not find it. (Probably fell out at Emmetts school or daycare) Now I have a crying kindergartener, who doesn’t want to walk into class because she’s missing a shoe and is embarrassed and worried about what her classmates will think. We walk into Mrs. Holmes class and Brooklyn is hiding behind me, afraid of her peers. I explain to Mrs. Holmes and her class what happened and guess what Mrs. Holmes did! She told all the class to take off their shoes so they could be like Brooklyn. Brooklyn went from sooo sad to the happiest girl on earth! She felt so special and so important to her teacher and all her classmates. What a wonderful example of an amazing teacher who is willing to go the extra mile to make all students feel included and a part of a family in her classroom! Thank you, Judy Holmes, for all the things you do for your students! You are such a role model for all teachers and parents and an example of what it truly means to love our children. ❤️”
Ms. Holmes then took it a step further and used the students’ shoes to create a real object graph for math. The students had a great day in their socks!
