Mrs. Clark's First Grade
Fun in Room 508!
October is busy and full of FUN!
This month has been a busy one and full of FUN! 2 field trips, a BIG birthday bash, and a week of dress up days PLUS a Fall party. PHEW! Take a look at what's been going on (and what's to come)!
Personal Narrative Writing and WORD Detectives
We recently finished up our Writing Unit on "Pattern Books" and have moved on to Personal Narrative Writing. Our students are really enjoying picturing their stories in their head, writing out their story, and then adding to their story with detailed illustrations. We talked about how a story is like a movie on paper and the illustrations should help tell the story. Here is a portion of our class "shared writing" and my (crude) illustration to model adding the details. We also shared our first "seed stories" with our peers for feedback! Ask your child what's the difference between a "seed story" and a "pumpkin story"!
In Reading, we are learning how to become "word detectives" to crack the case of tricky words! We have a team of "spys" that help us read better. Ask your child about Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flippy Dolphin, Eagle Eye, and Tryin' Lion and what those secret agents help us to accomplish when reading!

Math and Social Studies
In Math, we have all kinds of fun learning about word problems, addition, and subtraction facts PLUS how to know if the problem should be addition on subtraction. Ask your child what the words altogether, difference, joining, and separating mean?
Our Social Studies unit has evolved from our community to our country. We will even hold a (mock) election! I wonder who will win president of our class: Mrs. Clark or the DucK?
