Tumbleweed Times Week 15
News from Ranch 25 - December 11, 2015
First Grade Happenings
In math this week we learned two strategies that help us quickly solve subtraction problems that have -7, -8, and -9 from a teen number. One strategy is called "Taking from Ten" and the other is called "Counting On". To learn more about these strategies you can look at your child's math work in the Friday Folder or go to this parent letter: Math News: Grade 1, Module 2, Topic B.
Just a reminder. . .We do not complete every problem or page in our math packets each day. If the students are picking up the strategy or skill quickly, then we move on. It's a great idea to have your child demonstrate their knowledge to you by completing an unfinished page.
In social studies, we learned about the holidays of Hanukkah and Christmas by reading books, watching educational videos, and by creating some great art. Since so many students in our class celebrate one or both of these holidays, we had a great time sharing our family traditions.
Decorating an evergreen tree is a holiday tradition for Christmas.
Playing the Dreidel Game is a holiday tradition for Hanukkah.
We loved creating winter snow globes with our 3rd Grade Buddies.

Care and Share
A great big THANK YOU to all of you who have sent in a gift or contribution for our Care and Share program this year. Your gifts and donations will make such an impact on one family's holiday. If you planned to participate, but didn't have a chance to go shopping, please contact Karen Sykes at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible, so she will know your gift is coming on Monday. If you are unable or do not plan to participate, Karen needs to know that as well. Send her an email. She and I (along with some other families) want to fill in any missing items from our "assignment" list. Thanks again!
