FEBRUARY!
I can't believe it is already February and we are already getting excited for Fair of Hearts! You will see in Friday letters this week that we are working on explaining "what we have learned" through the week and not just "what we did". Students are learning a lot about themselves as readers, mathematicians, writers, and thinkers! Here are some highlights from the last two weeks.
Learning about Fractions
This is our fraction image this week! We spent a great deal of time with this math image throughout the week. When we look at it, we focus on what we see, what we think, and what we wonder. Each time we look at it, we notice new things and connect the learning we are doing. Take a close look at the image. What do you see, think, and wonder?
Read Aloud
We have been reading Tiger Boy by Mitali Perkins, an author from India. We thought about the main character Neel and the problems he was facing as a boy. Ask your students about them and how Neel's life turned out.
Word Study
We are looking for patterns in our words and sorting them accordingly. What patterns do you see in words around you?
What surprises you are you read?
Readers have been paying attention to things that surprise them, make them wonder, make them question, or make them go "WOW"! We have been talking about how when we notice information that surprises us, we are looking deeper at the writing then if we were just to skim over it. We are reading for meaning!
FAIR OF HEARTS!
The Fair of Hearts will be help on Friday, February 12th. We will have a bit of time in the morning to exchange Valentine's Day cards with classmates. In this week's Friday folder, students have a list of names for their cards. They can make a box or bag to bring in to collect their valentines. The Fair of Hearts Raffle information is also in their folder coming home this weekend. The kids are very excited for next Friday!
