Cooperative Learning Strategy
Inside-Outside Circle
Steps for the Strategy
- Students pair up, then the class forms two concentric circles with Partner A on the inside and Partner B on the outside. Partners face each other.
- Pose a question and Partner A shares his/her answer with Partner B. Then Partner B shares his/her answer.
- Direct either the inside circle or the outside circle to rotate either clockwise or counter clockwise.
- Once the students have rotated they have a new partner and steps 2-3 are repeated.
Management Tips
- Alternate way for forming circles: Students create one large circle, they pair up, one partner moves to the inside, partners face each other.
- Stand inside the circle allows better teacher management.
- Students can demonstrate they are finished discussing by both turning to face the teacher in the center.
- Questions should not require paper or pencil to answer. Short answer or higher level thinking skills questions should be asked.
- Provide two different sets of cards which contain the questions (instead of being asked by the teacher)—one set of the inside circle, one set for the outside circle.
7 Ways to Increase Student Engagement in the Classroom
Use the 10:2 method
- For every 10 minutes of instruction allow the students 2 minutes to process and respond to the instruction.
Incorporate movement into your lesson
- Require students to respond to a question by moving to a certain spot in the room, writing on a whiteboard, etc.
- Evidences shows that when teaching is at a brisk instructional pace, student have more opportunities to engage, respond and move to the next concept.
Provide frequent and effective feedback
Allow students 5 to 7 seconds of "think time" when asking a question
- Draw a random name out to answer the question
Have students use the 3-2-1 method to summarize lesson
- Students record three things they learned, two interesting things and one questions they have. Allow time to share their findings out.
Pause
- When teaching pause mid-sentence to allow students to fill in the blanks

Formative Assessment Tip
Roll The Die
Put a die at each desk. At the end of class, each student rolls and briefly answers aloud a question based on the number roll:
1 - I want to remember...
2 - Something I learned today
3 - One word to sum up what I learned
4 - Something I already knew
5 - I'm still confused about...
6 - An "aha" moment that I had today
