BFH Falcons View

January 10 to 14, 2022

Principal's Message

Dear Falcon students and families,

Happy New Year! Our entire Bev Facey staff all hope you had a restful break and were able to recharge and get some well needed rest before starting 2022. The weather has definitely been challenging, but it looks we are in for a reprieve in the upcoming week with some milder temperatures on the way.

We are very excited and looking forward to the return of in person student learning on January 10, 2022. We understand that there are many unanswered questions that parents and students may have with escalating COVID numbers within the Edmonton area. While the situation is constantly changing and evolving, please be confident in the knowledge that the Bev Facey staff have been preparing for whatever situation comes our way in the next few days or weeks.

Right now, we are eagerly anticipating the return of our Falcons on Monday! We are focusing on mitigating the risks and we have outlined a few of the procedures and practices we will be using in our "Bev Facey January 10 Re-Entry Reference Info Sheet" that you can access in the link below. One of the bigger changes that will be occurring starting tomorrow will be the temporary pause on all assemblies, performance activities, intramural, and extracurricular sports. Please access our social media accounts and school web page for updates around when these will return.

We know that the current situation will present challenges just as the previous waves of the pandemic have done. We are so thankful to our Bev Facey community who have shown tremendous understanding, resilience and strength. Together in supporting one another and collaborating to ensure we are all safe and are able to continue our learning. For that reason we are extremely optimistic about what this new year will bring as we work our way through whatever it presents before us.

All the best in 2022 and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Final Assessments in 2022

Big picture

As detailed in the communication from the Elk Island Public School division, it is imperative that quality teaching and learning continues to be the focus and sound assessment is a part of quality teaching and learning. Final assessments for students will continue at the end of January. As stated Wednesday, Alberta Education has canceled January diploma examinations. Final assessments for all non-diploma courses will follow regular assessment plans that were in place previous to the announcement of diplomas being cancelled. Ultimately, we will modify these assessments to account for the three lost days of instruction to ensure these are fair to students. For 30 level courses, the final assessment will possibly consist of final unit exams, re-do/re-write of previous assessments, or a cumulative exam that would account for no more than 10 % of the final mark. Teachers at the 30 level will communicate specifics as we start this week. These assessments are another opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding while providing the teacher another key piece of evidence. As always, evidence based professional judgement is used when determining student final grades.

Please refer to the link below to access the revised 2022 final assessment schedule.
