Announcements
- Curious how the executive board plans to spend the Harper PTO funds next year? Take a look at the 2018-2019 proposed budget online at the following link - http://harperpto.com/category/pto/budget/. The entire PTO will vote on this proposed budget at the May 9th meeting at 8:45 am. Please reach out to treasurer@harperpto.com if you have any questions. Our programs and events are made possible by your generous contributions. Thank you!
- Attention 2nd Grade Parents! On Friday May 18th your child will be participating in the annual Bike Safety Training between 8:45- 10:15am. A representative from ATA and Wilmette Police officers will demonstrate proper helmet fitting, bike locks and safety rules of the road. Additionally, the students will ride through an obstacle course set up on the school black top. If your child is not comfortable riding a bicycle on their own, it is perfectly fine for them to scooter or walk the course. Please contact Sam Wallace (samswallace@yahoo.com) with further questions.
- Harper Fun Fair will be Thursday May 24 from 3:15-4:15pm on Harper North Field. There is no rain date. Adult supervision is required. Tickets can be purchased in advance starting Monday May 14. Sponsored by Harper Student Council and ticket donations will benefit local charities. We are looking for parent donations for small prizes to raffle off during Fun Fair. Some ideas include: stuffed animals, lego set, fidget cube, Rubix cube, Pokemon or sports trading cards, board games, or small gift cards for Homer’s or local restaurants. If you would like to donate a prize, please send to Harper, c/o Rachel Mor by Friday, May 11. Contact Rachel Mor (morr@wilmette39.org) or Kate Cummings (cummingk@wilmette39.org) for questions.
- It’s time to order your school supplies for next year! Online ordering is underway and will end on Friday, May 18th. Don't miss out, order your school supplies for the 2018/2019 school year by visiting www.edukitinc.com and typing in Harper to begin your order. Once your order is complete you will receive a confirmation email and your student’s kit will be waiting for them in their classroom on the first day of school. To order for another District 39 school, simply go to www.edukitinc.com and enter the school name to find the supplies for that school. A portion of the sales from each school kit will be donated to the Harper PTO. Questions? Contact Sara O'Hare at schoolkits@harperpto.com
- Attention former students of Miss Kathy Hofschield (and parents of students). Kathy is retiring at the end of this year. She has been teaching Kindergarten & 1st grade in D39 since 1991. Please consider writing a letter wishing her well with your memories of her and how she has impacted your life. Email letters to jwwindycity@gmail.com, or drop off at the Harper School front desk by May 15th.

After School Programming at HMS/WJHS:
We want to thank Youth Connection for their many years of service to HMS and WJHS families through the DEN, Homework Club, and events such as Variety Show and Battle of the Bands, as well as Mudlark theater workshops. Their dissolution for the coming school year will create a void at HMS and WJHS that is not easily filled.
In efforts to continue the good work started by Youth Connection, District 39 has been developing a plan for after-school programming for the 2018-2019 school year. At the April Board of Education meeting we shared the details of this plan for the newly rebranded “Hawk Nest” and “Wolf Den.” There will be an opportunity for students to participate in a fun after-school program at both HMS and WJHS next year. At HMS the program will run from 3:40 - 5:40 PM, and at WJHS the program will run from 3:15 - 5:15 PM. Supervisors and students will work together to develop activities that may include games, crafts, technology, and outside recreation. There will also be time daily for students wanting a quiet place to complete homework in a structured setting. The after school programs will take place in the libraries at the schools, and a small daily fee will be charged for students wanting to drop in. Additional information is in the Board meeting highlights or in the April Board report.
More details will be communicated as we get closer to the start of the next school year to help you with your planning.
Green Corner
- You may have noticed a new tree in Harper’s field on the corner of Dartmouth and Thornwood. It is a White Oak planted in honor of Arbor Day and was made possible by the Wilmette Optimist Club. Third and fourth graders were given seedlings of a White Pine to plant with their families as well. They can grow to towering heights!
- And the results are in: the children voted for their favorite endangered animal. They used their coins and allowances (and possibly, some loans) to show their support. And less than a dollar separated the winner: Whale $73.08, Turtle $72.14 and Frog $19.75. Please stay tuned to find out which organization(s) the funds will be donated to...
