The Importance of Reading
YES Parents,
I hope you had a relaxing vacation with your family. Our two school days last week gave us enough time to get our students reconnected to their classrooms, and we are rolling right along.
Our teachers had the opportunity to hear teacher and author Donalyn Miller talk on Wednesday. Mrs. Miller reminded us of the importance of reading to students and encouraging them to read as much as possible. Even though I have seen this chart before, it never fails to impress upon me the importance of reading. We will be pushing our students to read here at school, but we need your help to make reading a priority outside of our walls.
Below is a graphic that demonstrates the importance of reading.

Notes with Nurse Julia
We all know sick students are not at their best to learn, but sometimes it’s tricky deciding when to keep them home. Here are a few guidelines to help you know when to keep your child home.
Keep your child home if they have:
- Diarrhea
- A persistent cough
- A severe sore throat
- An undiagnosed rash
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- A fever of 100.5 degrees or more
- Vomiting, nausea or abdominal pain
- A severe earache with or without fever
If your child has asthma, keep them home if:
- Their peak flow meter readings are not near the target number
- They are too weak or tired to take part in their usual daily activities
- They have difficulty breathing and shortness of breath when speaking
- They have any symptoms that continue 30 minutes after medication is administered
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
During their time in the computer lab, students will learn how to log in and navigate Office 365. The students will also type their Christmas break stories in Office 365 using Word. With Office 365 you can Access your files anywhere – such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. This means you can access your student’s typing assignments and read them from home.

The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Welcome to 2017! I hope you have spent time with your children reflecting on the previous year. It is fun to remember the good times and to decide how to change the things we may not have liked so much. Some ideas for goal setting may include: bed times, study time, exercise, eating healthier, having more positive attitudes, and even having a time to relax. This is not only a new year, but a new semester as well. Students need to focus on setting new goals. Help your children set realistic goals for both their academic and personal lives. Setting goals helps children raise their self-esteem. Building strong children today only invests in our futures.
In Guidance we will be focusing on goal setting during our first few weeks of January. Take time to ask your children about the goals they have set at school.
“Write in on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”

January Habit and Manner Focus:
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Key Phrase: You're in Charge!
What this habit looks like in action: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Key Phrase: I have a plan!
What this habit looks like in action: I set goals for myself. I have a plan for how I will accomplish my goals. I think about what I want to be when I grow up and how I will get there.
Manner Focus: Keep your hands to yourself (Walking down the hall, sitting next to someone).
